Description Theaimofthiscourseistoprovidestudentswithanopportunitytolearnthe
basicknowledge(knowing)andskills(doing)tospecifyandtodevelop
computerinformationsystems.Thecoursewillfocusonthefrontendofthe
systemdevelopmentlifecycle(SDLC),byexamininginsomedetailsthe
techniques,methods,tools,procedures,andmethodologiesemployedby
systemsanalystsintheanalysis,designandimplementationoforganizational
informationsystems.Thiscourseintroducesestablishedandevolving
methodologiesfortheanalysis,design,anddevelopmentofaninformation
system.Emphasisisplacedonsystemcharacteristics,managingprojects,
prototyping,CASE/OOMtools,andsystemsdevelopmentlifecyclephases.
Uponcompletion,studentsshouldbeabletoanalyzeaproblemanddesignan
appropriatesolutionusingacombinationoftoolsandtechniques.

Objectives Thestudentsareexpectedtobeableto:
1. Developtheneededcommunicationandanalyticalskillstosolicit,identify,
analyzeandrefinelooselystructureduserrequirementstoproducea
meaningfulsystemdesignspecification.Describethekeyconcepts,major
objectives,taskset,andtoolsusedineachphaseoftheSDLC.
2. Distinguishbetweenthedifferentsoftwareprocessmodels(waterfall,
iterative,prototyping,spiral),anddescribetheircharacteristics.
3. Describethemajorsystemsdevelopmentmethodologies(SADT,RAD,JAD,
participatory,OOADetc.)ofsystemsdevelopmentandthecriteriafortheir
selection.
4. Communicatewithpotentialsystemsuserseffectivelyandprofessionally,to
elicit,clarify,defineandrefineuserrequirements.
5. Conductananalysisoftheinformationrequirementsofanorganizationto
modelitsinformationprocessingneeds.
6. Produceappropriatesystemspecificationsanddocumentationateach
phaseofthesystemdevelopmentlifecycle.Thiswillincludebutnotlimited
toinputandoutputscreens,forms,queries,reportsanduserdialogues.
