Individual Behavior: Foundation & theories LECTURE 1 OB Defined – OB is the systematic study of the actions & attitudes that people exhibit within the organisation. – It concentrates on 3 types of behavior that are important determinants of employee performance: 1. PRODUCTIVITY 2. ABSENTEEISM & 3. TURNOVER. – OB is also concerned with employee 4. JOB SATISFACTION. – The field of OB seeks to replace intuitive explanations with systematic study which means the scientific evidence gathered under controlled conditions and measured & interpreted in a reasonably rigorous manner to attribute Cause & Effect. Variables affecting Individual Behavior • Personality • Perception • Values • Abilities • Attitude • Learning • Organisational/Work factors • Family • Peer group Pressures • Personal Life Experiences • Natural Culture INNATE FACTORS ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS • The concept of Factors affecting Individual behavior was developed by LEWIN (1951) with the model: B = f (P, E) Where B = Behavior P = Person (innate), and E = Environment.
