Cultural Beliefs, Traditions, and Societal Norms Cultural beliefs, traditions, and societal norms play a significant role in shaping the narratives and characters in Asian and African literature. Stories often revolve around cultural practices, rituals, and customs, offering insights into the values, traditions, and social dynamics of different cultures. Characters may grapple with societal expectations, family obligations, and the tension between tradition and modernity. 3. Role of Language, Oral Tradition and Storytelling Language, oral tradition, and storytelling are integral to preserving and transmitting cultural heritage in Asian and African societies. Many literary works draw on oral traditions, folklore, and indigenous languages, preserving cultural knowledge and historical narratives. Contemporary writers may navigate the tension between preserving cultural authenticity and engaging with global audiences by incorporating traditional storytelling techniques while also experimenting with language and form. 4. Influence of Historical Event, Colonialism, and Globalization Historical events, colonialism, and globalization have profoundly influenced the development of literature in Asia and Africa. Writers often address issues of identity, diaspora, and belonging in response to colonial legacies and the complexities of globalization. Literary works may explore themes of cultural hybridity, resistance to colonial oppression, and the impact of globalization on local traditions and communities. 5. Notable Literary Movements, Genres, and Authors Some notable literary movements, genres, and authors from Asia and Africa include the Negritude movement in Africa, the postcolonial literature of South Asia, and the magical realism of Latin America. Writers such as Chinua Achebe, Naguib Mahfouz, Haruki Murakami, and Arundhati Roy have contributed to the global literary landscape by challenging stereotypes and misconceptions about their respective regions while offering diverse perspectives and narratives. Where would he be going?"  Excerpt from the novel "Ilustrado” by Miguel Syjuco "We were all there to watch fireworks explode above the bay, just as we'd been doing since we were kids. HOW TO WRITE A CLOSE ANALYSIS Select a Literary Text Choose a literary text that interests you or is assigned by the instructor.
