"She shall not be moved": Summary!
The short story "She shall not be moved" written by Sheeren Pandit, is about a woman's
feeling of powerlessness, as she goes against her own principles by not standing up
against racial injustice.
The protagonist enters the bus with her daughter, finding the aisle blocked by a Somali
woman holding a baby and carrying a pram. Two white women are occupying the seats in
the designed area, but instead of being called out and moving seats, the black woman
gets blamed and insulted by the bus driver for being in the way.
Contrary to what the narrator has always taught her daughter, in this situation she decides
to remain silent in the face of a racial discrimination. This eventually leads her to regret her
decision, as she does not act as she preaches. Instead she backs down when she is faced
with a real problem, disappointing her daughter.
