"Ignore the other guy. Canal water is never safe to drink because it has no current to stop it from stagnating. The actual benefit is that because roads were poor and the only transport was horse and cart the length of time taken to move goods and people was very slow. Having a canal cuts down the time and effort and greatly increases the amount of goods and people that can be moved. So this way trade can become faster and more lucrative."
