"sender and receiver share secret key. Message authentication code: Use of a secret key to generate a small block of data, known as a message authentication code, that is appended to the message. This provides authentication if only sender and receiver share secret key. Hash function: Calculate a hash code over the message plus a secret key, then send the message and the hash code, but not the secret key. The receiver uses the incoming message and the shared secret key to verify the hash code."
