How is flow rate used in industry?

in industry when a substance is entering to or leaving a unit its amount per unit time i.e flow rate must be known because every equipment can handle a specific amount of material. for example the design flow rate at furnace inlet is 100 kg/h, so the operating flow must be nearer to 100 kg/h because if flow is above 100 kg/h, the tubes of furnace can't handle the extra material and if flow is below 100 kg/h, over heating of tubes can occur.
