What is a heat pump exactly?

"I looked it up, but I don't understand. The current 80% furnace is in a closet in the living room, in the front of the house. It is gas. Is this heat pump something to aid in pushing the heat to the back of the house that is not getting heat as efficiently since it is ducted down from the ceiling, whereas the original house is floor heating. The back of the house is a big addition. There is ONE downflow vent to allow heat into the back bedroom. The other part, which is the laundry area, has no vent at all. And, they removed the venting from the bathroom in the center of the house. It this Heat Pump supposed to get that heat back there or something? Or is it a different kind of a furnace, to replace what I have now? and to replace the A/C unit?If you've missed my other posts, they want me to change my floor heating in the whole house to a ceiling push-down heat flow. It doesnt work in the back of the house. But maybe cuz the furnace is trying to do both??? Push air UP... AND push air DOWN???I don't want it on the ceiling. But the city inspector with the city interest free loan program does.I hate cold feet. And he is what I guess would be a typical city inspector... it's his way, or no way.And... once it is all done, any problems are between me and the GC. I already went before the board to agree with that.... so how can this man DEMAND what I can select to do... If the heat and A/C are done and it is lousy, he don't care... He is out of it. And the GC will just tell me .... well, YOU told ME what to do and so I did it... it was up to you....!!"
