Who was a more important leader in China, Mao Zedong or Deng Xiaoping?

Mao was the dictator of China while both were living, thus he is the more famous of the two. It was Mao that controlled the troops in northern China during WW2 and then fought the Chinese Nationalist to take control of China in 1949.
