Why was sugar important for the colonists in the Americas?

Because it was one of the resources that was special to the Americas. The Americas had other resources too, but sugar was especially awesome because it grew really well in the Carribean area, because of the climate, so it was really good to build the American economy. Plus, it was important because the people who worked on the sugar plantations were mostly people of the carribean who were working as slaves to the newly arrived colonists.
