Why did workers form unions in the late 19th century? What factors limited the success of unions?

"The need to protect and improve conditions when they were aware of the massive wealth gained by the employers. There was a hindrance to their success. In times of strikes the employer found it easy to sack the union leaders as there were lots of new immigrants that would get work under any conditions."
