Applying Social Psychology and Personality Department of Psychology, Grand Canyon University PSY 102: General Psychology 2 Applying Social Psychology and Personality These fields, relevant in various settings such as relationships, work, education, and healthcare, enhance our comprehension of life. By applying these concepts in daily life, people can strengthen their social connections. The Christian worldview is crucial in understanding social psychology and personality, as it integrates morality and religion into interactions. Moreover, social psychology and personality theories help us grasp the behaviors of individuals, communities, and societies, and how a Christian perspective can enhance our interactions with diverse backgrounds. Individual, Group, or Societal Behavior Human behavior has been shaped by social norms and biases over time, complicating self-expression. Grison and Gazzaniga (2021) note that people often remain unaware of their own biases, impacting their judgments due to ingrained preconceptions. For example, some individuals believe people of different races are more alike than people of their own race. Stereotypes can lead to discrimination and prejudice, which hinder cooperation and foster
rivalry. Cooperation may be encouraged if one team wins an event, but the opposing team could become upset and cause disturbances (Grison & Gazzaniga, 2021). Competitions can lead to violent altercations between competitors, affecting social norms. Research by Koudenburg, Greijdanus, and Scheepers (2019) suggests that when social norms are well-established within a significant societal category, people’s judgments do not adapt to the context. Understanding the connection between social psychology and personality with individual, group, and societal behavior is crucial when considering the Christian worldview.
