21ST CENTURY LITERATURE | MY BROTHER’S PECULIAR CHICKEN My Brother’s Peculiar Chicken Answer the following questions comprehensively.
1. Who were the main characters in the story? Describe their roles shortly. Brother of Kiko – he was also the narrator of the story and the brother of Kiko who believes that the peculiar chicken is a hen. Kiko – the one who owns the peculiar chicken and believes that the chicken is a rooster. Mother – mother of the narrator and Kiko, who believes that the peculiar chicken is a “binabae”, a rooster that looks like a hen. Father – father of the narrator and Kiko, who also believes that the peculiar chicken is a hen. Teniente del Barrio – the chief and the oldest man in the village who believes that the chicken is a bird of some other kind. Mr. Eduardo Cruz – owner of the largest poultry business in town, who cannot determine whether the chicken is in fact a hen or a rooster basing from its feathers. 2. If you were one of the characters in the story, is it important to find out the gender of the chicken? Why or why not? The purpose of finding out the gender of a certain chicken is you would be able to separate chickens according to gender in terms of their use, so then it is important. Hens lay eggs which are the source for egg production. They are also used for chicken meat production and were bred to grow large muscle and legs. While roosters are not used for the production of chicken meat and they do not lay eggs. Their purpose is to guard and protect the flock from the predators and are not bred to for the same purpose as to the hens but they are bred for combat in cock fights. 3. If you were given a chance to think of another title for the story, what would it be? Explain. If I were given a chance to think of another title for the story, I would name it “Chicken Strange” The story has talked about how the characters have argued to for the chicken really has strange or unique characteristics. Also, I feel like the title is really catchy and can easily catch the attention of the readers. 4. What is/are the conflict/s raised in the story? The conflict that was raised in the story is to determine whether the chicken is a hen or a rooster. It indeed brought a big confusion to everyone. It really is peculiar. So, to determine what the chicken really is, the brothers decided to put the chicken in a cockpit and let it fight the red rooster. They both agreed that if the peculiar chicken wins the fight, it is a rooster and if it loses, it is a hen. Later on, the chicken wins the fight settling the

5. What was the main theme of the story? Explain. People have their own opinions and beliefs about something. We cannot force everyone to have the same beliefs that we have. Our beliefs may be opposite to that of the other person because we all have different views or perspectives about certain things. 6. From what point of view is the story told? First point-of-view. The story is narrated by the brother of Kiko in a first point-of- view telling everything that has happened and everything that they have done just to determine the gender of the peculiar chicken. 7. How was the theme of the story relevant to the current situation of the Filipino people? Cite an example. Right now, when we are still in the middle of the pandemic. A lot of new problems arises day by day. We all have different perspectives on these things just like on how we should resolve a certain issue for example. We all could come up with various and not the same solutions because we all view things differently. Many may have agreed to how the government has been handling things since then but a lot of people are angry as well for they believe that they are not fulfilling their roles as public servants. Just like to how the people have believed whether the chicken is a hen or a rooster. It is the same as to how Filipinos believe that the government is doing the right thing or not.
