This is Literature According to Vinuya, (2011) Literature is man’s vehicle for self- expression – a form of catharsis (relief) and feelings of friendship. It is the preserver of national culture of a nation that preserves it; the showcase of people’s national upheavals (struggles); and, more importantly, it is a means or a tool for cultural transmission. It is through literature (along with other arts) that the cultural heritage of a people is passed on from one generation to the next. Of course, the primordial aim of literature is to entertain. Prose - Written or spoken language in its ordinary form, without metrical structure. Poetry - Literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a form of literature. Literary Forms pertain to the structure or the way a piece was published. ( in the form of non-fiction prose, fiction prose, poetry, drama or play) Literary Genres pertain to the category determined by the technique of the author in delivering his content (Comedy, Tragedy, Horror, Fantasy, Mystery, Mythology, Historical, Musical …) Genres like riddles (bugtong), proverbs (salawikain), songs (kundiman), fables, folktales, myths, and legends. It became an inspiration to other people to innovate by making few tweaks and generating new genre like rap and fliptop. The oral tradition of our ancestors lives in the modern time through rap battles, songs, and the like. • Riddles• is an indirect presentation of an object, by stating characteristics features or peculiarities, enough to call it to mind without naming it. • Proverbs Are pithy sayings that contain advice or state a basic truth. They reflect folk wisdom as to how to act and live, hence, they show the cultural values • Songs (folk songs) Are beautiful songs that are informal expressions of our ancestors’ experiences in life. Examples: serenade / harana lullabies harvests funerals • Tales • Tales are stories of origin for certain places, things, etc. their names, and their creation. • Also known as myths and legends. - They usually are used to explain certain events or phenomena in our ancestors’ lives that cannot be explained by the limited practical kind of science they knew back then. • Epics • Are long-winded poems about a hero and his adventures and misadventures. - It usually tells of a male hero who is born with all the pleasing qualities and who also has superhuman capabilities. - This male hero is also paired with a beautiful young maiden, whom he will fall in love with and will usually have to go to battle for. Just like proverb and riddle, songs are part of oral tradition that existed in the pre-colonial era and up to now.
