LESSON 1: PHILIPPINE LITERARY HISTORY FROM PRE-COLONIAL TO THE

CONTEMPORARY

Pre-Spanish Literature  Folk Tales- stories about life,adventure,love horror and humor where one can derive lessons Ex. The moon and the sun  The Epic Age - long narrative poems in which a series of heroic achievements or events usually of a hero are dealt with at length  Folk Songs - one of the oldest forms of Philippine Literature that emerged in the pre- Spanish period. These songs mirrored the early forms of culture. Many of which have 12 syllables Understanding Literary HIstory  Literature in this period may be classified as religious/secular prose and poetry  The first Filipino alphabet ALIBATA, was replaced by the roman alphabet  The teaching of Christian Doctrine became the basis of religious practices -European Legends and Traditions became assimilated in songs, corridos and moro-moros  Folk Songs -manifests the artistic feelings of filipinos  shows their appreciation of love and beauty ex.  newspapers circulated are only TRIBUNE and PHILIPPINE REVIEW  Filipino Poetry  common theme : nationalism, country , love and life in the barrios , faith, religion and the arts  3 Types of Poems  Haiku - free verse , 17 syllables divided in 3 lines  Tanaga - like Haiku , short but had measure and ryhme  Karaniwang Anyo ( Usual Form) PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN ENGLISH (1941-1945) -strict prohibitions of the Japanese -Dark Period of the Philippine Literature -New Philippine Literature- - Tagalog was revived. - Most Themes : Japanese brutalities , Poverty of Life under Japanese Government , Brave Guerilla Exploits. PERIOD OF ACTIVISM 1970-  According to Pociano Pineda , youth activism was due to domestic and worldwide causes , ills of the society , the youth moved to seek reforms. -The Literary Revolution - youth became vocal in their sentiments - demanded a change in the government - manifested in the bloody demonstrations and the sidewalk expressions and also in literature PERIOD OD THE NEW SOCIETY 1972-  started in September 21, 1972  Carlos Palanca Awards  Poems dealt with patience,regard for native culture etc  Newspapers donned new forms  News in economic progress were favored more than sensationalized reporting of killing, reape and roberries  Filipinos before were hooked in reading magazines and comics PERIOD OF THE 3RD REPUBLIC 1981-  Martial Rule was lifted on January 2, 1981  "The New Republic of The Philippines" - President Marcos  Poems during this period were romantic and revolutionary  Filipino Songs dealt with themes that were true-to-life like those of grief, poverty, love of God, etc. POST-EDSA 1 REVOLUTION 1986-  Filipino regained their independence

 In 4 days from February 21 -25 , 1986 the so called People Power (Lakas ng Bayan) prevailed  Newspapers : THE INQUIRER, MALAYA, PEOPLES JOURNAL 21st CENTURY PERIOD  ICT inclined  New codes and Lingos
