Nick Cremona Cremona 1 Professor Goins WRC 1013 19 Oct. 2009 Academic Cheating As the pressure grows each year for students to do well in school, academic cheating is becoming more prevalent than ever. Whether students are copying homework, or developing intricate schemes to ace their next test, cheating is everywhere. For some students, cheating is fueled by high expectations from their parents, while others simply see cheating as an easy way out of doing work. Whatever the reason may be, cheating is something that can manifest into a larger problem, and it is best to use more traditional forms of learning, such as studying. In fact, cheating is a far cry from learning. When one cheats, they are not retaining any of the information that is in question. Cheating may be a quick fix, but in the long run it is actually a detriment to one’s learning abilities. Some may argue that it is alright to cheat on something that a student will never use in life, or if it is not for their major. It may be true that it is useless information at the time, but learning the material has to do with problem solving skills, and applying that knowledge to other subjects. Another issue with cheating is that it may become a habit for students. When a student finds out that cheating is actually Cremona 2 quite easy to pull off, they may see it as an alternative to studying. This can lead to problems, because not only is the student inhibiting their own learning, but these habits can carry over once they are in the real world. When an employer is looking for someone to fill a job opening, they hope to hire someone that did well in school. When reviewing applicants, cheating in school is not going to show up on someone’s resume, but it will show up in that person’s work ethic. If a student decides to cheat their way through college, who’s to say they will not use those same strategies to get by in the workplace? Cheating inspires laziness, and it is best avoided if possible. There may be certain circumstances where a student is simply overloaded with work, and has no choice but to cheat occasionally in order to do well. This is tough, because cheating should never be someone’s first option. If it does not become a regular routine, it can be permissible in some cases. The problems come up when students become lethargic in their study habits, and resort to cheating instead. It is safe to say that a vast majority of former and current students have cheated at some point in their academic careers. Not to say that this is acceptable, but there are a number of ways to cheat, and nearly all of them go unnoticed.
