Organizations have humans who need clear communication in verbal and non-verbal human language. Since businesses have a different set of requirements, so we term the communication done and required in business organizations to be business communications. The success of any business organization is heavily depended on its communications. Organizations can be efficient and effective only when internally and externally it is able to co-ordinate. To co-ordinate and synchronize properly, businesses need to communicate effectively and efficiently. Learning from Business Leader To learn the art of business communication it is important to learn about best practices in the industry as identified by experts. Business communication may occur through e-mail, chat, phone, video-chat or in-person. There are identified best practices for business communication through every medium. One of the ways to identify best practices in business communication is to learn from industry leaders. It is true that a successful person may not be perfect in every art and move. But to know about communication strategies and skills of a business leader can help to give insights. In this endeavor, an analysis is done for communication done by Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon. BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: JEFF BEZOS Bezos felt that a six-page narrative memo as a guide could help business meetings effectively. Today every meeting in Amazon takes places with the 6-page narrative in the place. In a clever way, the Amazon CEO made his employees prepare well for a business meeting. It is one of the established best practices in business communication to know about the subject well. Mr. Jeff Bezos by insisting on a 6-page long memo and studying it silently before meetings forced his employees to prepare well for meetings. Though it seems that the Amazon CEO was aware of the problems of not being specific and to the point. He uses the rhetoric of comparing thoughtful and clear writing with the ‘clarity of angels singing’. The National Enquirer magazine belongs to American Media Inc. It is suspected that after Jeff Bezos brought The Washington Post there were business conflicts between him and the group. Jeff Bezos used lot of rhetoric in this letter as it was a public letter meant to handle a business crisis. This communication had the hallmarks of a crisis communication. In crisis it is important that the leader himself leads from the front to reassure his organization. Jeff Bezos took up himself to respond to the crisis by writing in the popular blog site medium.com. The rhetoric used by the author included appeals to emotions or Pathos as well as appeals to logic or Logos. BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: JEFF BEZOS To quote Jeff Bezos from his blog, “Something unusual happened to me yesterday. Actually, for me it wasn’t just unusual — it was a first. I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse. Or at least that’s what the top people at the National Enquirer thought.” In the above quotation we can see that Jeff Bezos uses rhetoric to play down the threat posed by National Enquirer of supposedly releasing his private pictures. The rhetoric used is of making fun of the threat posed. Document 3: Alexa Loses Her Voice Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCG OnH5A-0 The above link is of a video document titled ‘Alexa Loses Her Voice’. This was a funny commercial launched by Amazon.com on the eve of Super Bowl in 2018. The commercial advertisement was made to advertise about Alexa, the super smart AI based assistant from Amazon. The advertisement sought to reply to it critics as well as show Alexa important in Human lives. The most talked about feature of the advertisement was Amazon founder Jeff Bezos participation in the video advertisement. The video starts with Jeff Bezos calmly but in hurry moving around. A background voice informs audience that Alexa has lost her voice meaning that Alexa systems are down. The advertisement then shows celebrities trying to assist Alexa customers but failing to do so. The video further shows Jeff Bezos himself assisting customers. In mean while the system is restored, and Alexa becomes operational again. In this video Jeff Bezos used rhetoric through symbolism and non-verbal communication to communicate to customers that he himself is in-charge. Today BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: JEFF BEZOS customers do want more assurance and nothing better than the CEO assuring of keeping an eye on the service. It was also said to be part of efforts by Jeff Bezos to build a more public profile. Business communication effectiveness demands that the business leaders lead in communicating with customers.
