WORKSHEET 2C: NARRATIVE TRUTH AND EXHORTATION

Worksheets 2A and 2B are meant to help you understand the differences between truths and exhortations within some Biblical texts (like epistolary literature ). However, when dealing with a narrative (a story), we must use a different approach. Read the entire text and follow this process for analyzing the story. Who are the characters in the story? List them in the box to the right. Underline the major characters. Circle the PROTAGONIST (good guy) and place a box around the ANTAGONIST (bad guy). Identify the type of story this is. (Comic, tragic, punitive, etc. See the full list of story types on page 37 .) List the kind of conflict in the story (e.g., Man vs. Man, Man vs. Self, Man vs. God). Chart out the plot points of the story. Be sure to include elements like 1) setting, 2) rising action,

  1. crisis, and 4) resolution. You may find more elements to your story. List verses with major changes in the narrative (location, point of view, etc.) What weakness might contemporary believers share with the protagonist or antagonist in the story that needs the grace of God to overcome? (The FCF) At the point of crisis and resolution , what 1) specific truth is God teaching us or 2) specific instruction God is calling us to obey. (Theme) If both truth and exhortation are given, how are they related to one another?
