AU PSYC 432 ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY RUNNING HEAD- CLINICAL AND COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY 2024-2025 ATHABASCA UNIVERSITY Clinical and Counseling Psychology Careers Abstract psychologists who work primarily as researchers, others who work primarily as practitioners and many who do both scientist-practitioners. Counseling Psychologist A counseling Psychologist deal with patients with problems in the home, jobs, and communities [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. They identify the strengths and resources they can use to help deal with their problems [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. These can include mental health, marriage, substance abuse, and behavioral disorder counselors. They can provide treatment for many different problems to include anxiety, depression, stress, and suicide [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. Counseling psychologist Interact with clients to assist them in gaining insight, defining goals, and planning action to achieve effective personal, social, educational, or vocational development and adjustment. Identify psychological, emotional, or behavioral issues and diagnose disorders, using information obtained from interviews, tests, records, or reference materials. Use a variety of treatment methods, such as psychotherapy, hypnosis, behavior modification, stress reduction therapy, psychodrama, or play therapy. Counsels individuals and groups regarding problems, such as stress, substance abuse, or family situations, to modify behavior or to improve personal, social, or vocational adjustment (onetonline.org). When it comes to marriage and family they can evaluate and treat for substance abuse, stress, and other issues in dealing with family and marriage. Along with social workers and family therapists. Metropolitan areas have the higher employment rate, and salary ranges from $30,000 - $80,000 annually depending on your educational level and location. Entry level education is a master’s degree, on the job training internship, and residency. In order to work as a counselor or therapist you must be licensed in the state which you are treating patients in [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. There is also an exam that must be done along with annual continuing education. Depending on the specialty mental health and family counselors have anywhere from 19-20 % growth in the next ten years [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. Because of the increase in health care and military veterans needing help the outlook is expected to be high for counseling psychologists. Clinical Psychologist Clinical psychologists evaluate, detect, and treat emotional, mental and behavior disorders. This sounds much like counseling psychologists, but clinical psychologist is trained differently and can give diagnostic tests and give individual to multiple people psychotherapy [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. These range from short-term crises, such as difficulties resulting from adolescent rebellion, to more severe, chronic conditions such as schizophrenia. Some clinical psychologists treat specific problems exclusively, such as phobias or clinical depression. Clinical psychologist also collects information about individuals or clients, document session notes, progress notes, recommendations and treatment plans. conduct interviews, case histories, observational techniques, and other assessment methods. Counsel individuals, groups, or families to help them understand problems, deal with crisis situations, define goals, and develop realistic action plans (onetonline.org). These psychologists can focus on a certain group of people and specialties. Health and Neuropsychologists are two of the specialties [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. Much like they sound they can focus on determining health issues or disorders dealing with the brain. There are stipulations only a few states allow clinical psychologists to prescribe medications. Like many of the others the environment is schools, hospitals, family services, and government. The major states like California, Texas, and New York have the higher employment rates for clinical psychologists [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. When it comes to salary one can expect anywhere from $70,000 a year and up. Most Clinical Psychologist require a PhD or doctrine and do an internship under the supervision of a professional [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. Clinical Psychologist is increasing by 20 % growth over the next ten years [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. Median salary for this type of job is about $70,000 a year. School psychologist must have a specialty degree in education, license, and must complete an internship [ CITATION Uni \l 1033 ]. Some may have a master’s degree or doctoral degree. In clinical psychology, science, theory, and clinical knowledge are combined to improve psychological distress or dysfunction, and to promote personal well-being. Clinical and counseling psychology are similar subdisciplines. Cognitive psychology is the scientific study of how people perceive, remember, think, speak, and solve problems, by exploring internal mental processes in the brain. Quantitative psychology studies the methods and techniques used to measure human traits, the design of research studies, and the analysis of psychological data. Health psychology focuses on how biology, behavior, and social factors influence health, such as the onset and course of disease, and the prevention of illness. Sports psychology explores psychological factors that influence involvement and performance in sports (psychologyinaction.org). Humanistic Humanistic therapists care most about the present and helping their clients achieve their highest potential. Instead of energy spent on the past or on negative behaviors, humanists believe in the goodness of all people and emphasize a person’s self-growth and self-actualization which includes client-centered, gestalt, and existential therapies in which therapists need to show their genuine care and interest that focuses on the belief that clients control their own destinies.
