CPU 100 David Craig 23 April, 2012 Careers Research Assignment Speech Pathologist: 1. Describe the occupation or career path. What are people in this profession trying to achieve? People in this profession are successful when they are able to ____? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Speech-language pathologists diagnose and treat a variety of speech, language, and swallowing disorders in patients” (BLS 1). They feel successful when they help someone that has a disorder to overcome it and continue to live a prosperous life without much interference. 2. What are some of the main responsibilities of this position or career path? What do people in this profession spend their day doing? In the wise geek website, it states that “Speech language pathologists usually work one-on-one with their clients, rather than in groups of two or more people. The first visit or two with a new patient is usually spent assessing the type of language or speech disorder they are affected by. Next, the speech therapist will spend some time devising a treatment plan that will most effectively help their client improve their speech or language skills. Treatment might entail not only working on conventional speech and language skills, but also development of alternate communication methods, as some clients may have impaired speech or language to the point where they cannot communicate verbally” (Lloyd 1). 3. What do people find rewarding about this occupation? I feel that the most rewarding part of this occupation is helping all the people with the different speech impediments and disorders. I feel that speech pathologists enjoy the work they do because it makes them feel like they are making a difference in the world. 4. What skills are needed to be successful in this occupation? “A successful career in speech therapy requires both practical and personal skills, including excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a well-developed ability to work with people one-on-one. Patience, tact, and compassion are important personal skills for these types of health care jobs. As with many other health care careers, it’s also important for a speech language pathologist to be able to work with and teach people from different cultures and different social or economic backgrounds” (BLS 1). 5. What interest should one have if they are to enter this field? According to California Career Zone, people who work in this occupation generally like to work around people and should have an artistic side, which means they should be imaginative and think outside the box (CCC 1). 6. A) What degrees, certificates or credential are required for this occupation? How long does it take to get them? B) What major(s) would be desirable to prepare for this occupation? A) According to California Career zone, “Most…require graduate school. For example, they may require a Ph.D., M.D., or J.D.” (CCZ 1). B) Some of the common college majors that are used in this career are Communication Sciences and Disorders, General, Speech-Language Pathology/Pathologist, Audiology/Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathology/Pathologist, and Communication Disorders Sciences and Services (CCZ 1). 7. What is the job outlook for this occupation? The outlook for this occupation seems fairly decent because on the California Career Zone site it states that the approximate employed speech pathologists was at about 9,600 jobs and the projected employment will be at around 11,200 by 2018 (CCZ 1). 8. What are some other occupations that are closely related? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics some jobs that are similar to a speech pathologist would be an Audiologist, a physical therapist, and even a psychologist (BLS 1). 9. What is the salary range for this occupation? The average annual wage in California for a Speech-Language pathologist is about $83,710 with people making between $57,120 and 114,590. This seems like a decent job to go into if you are into the money (CCZ 1). 10. What opportunities exist for advancement? What are some of the names of positions that someone in this field can advance to? Out of the three sites I have looked up, it seems that there is no really opportunity for advancement because it seems like you just fit into a specific career. 11. What other information you learned about this career/occupation that was of interest to you? The most important or well, interesting information I found about tis career is that this career is that in this career you have the possibility to earn a large wage. Also, I learned that this career is going to have openings throughout these upcoming years. In my opining that was one of the most important pieces of information because you can research a career, but it the career will not be open, then what is the point of researching it. Human Resources Specialist 1. Describe the occupation or career path. What are people in this profession trying to achieve? People in this profession are successful when they are able to_____? According to Michigan Civil Service Commission, a HR specialist is responsible for a human resource program or specialty area, or as an administrative assistant to an administrator or executive. Their job is basically to keep the employees working as effectively as possible, and keeping the office up to date with young and energetic staff (Michigan 1). 2. What are some of the main responsibilities of this position or career path? What do people in this profession spend their day doing? The responsibilities for this career path are that an HR specialist should be able to fill a position with a well-qualified candidate; also, they should be able to report back to high level executives and give them an overview of employee relations and offer ways of improving productivity (Education 1). 3. What do people find rewarding about this occupation? I think people just enjoy this job because you get to work with others and still have a somewhat high level job. Also, you get to , in some cases, run the office because you have to keep everything running smoothly between workers. 4. What skills are needed to be successful in this occupation? In order to be the best in this occupation you need to be “[knowledgeable]… of the operational and technical problems involved in the administration of a specialized program. [Also], knowledge of the assigned program specialty” (Michigan 4). 5. What interests should one have if they are to enter this field? People who are planning on entering this field should be interested in enterprising, have a good social personality and be conventional, according to California Career Zone (CCZ 1). 6. a) What degrees, certificates or credentials are required for this occupation? How long does it take to get them? B) What major(s) would be desirable to prepare for this occupation? A. & B. According to Education-Portal.com what people need in order to enter this field is a, minimum, bachelor’s degree. Degrees in human resources are typically not offered until the graduate leve, so human resource specialists pursue degrees in business or similar majors. 7. What is the job outlook for this occupation? According to the California Career Zone website, the outlook for this occupation is not that bad. In 2008 this occupation employed approzimately 19,600 people, and it is estimated that by 2018 there will be an increase to 23,800 (CCZ 1). 8. What are some other occupations that are closely related? Some occupations that are similar to this one, would be compliance officer, logistician, or even a business operations manager, according to usnews.com (usnews.com). 9. What is the salary range for this occupation? The median wage for a HR specialist is about $54,160 and it is in between $40,640 and $71,180 (usnews.com). 10. What opportunities exist for advancement? What are some of the names of positions that someone in this field can advance to? Some of the advancements would all have to be within the company, so there would be a lot of opportunities for advancement. 11. What other Information you learned about this career/occupation that was of interest to you? I learned that I have all the skills required to be a HR specialist, I also enjoyed the description of the job and I am positive that I would enjoy working in an office. 12. Now that you have researched this field, is it still of interest to you? Why or why not?
