GEOINT - The exploitation and analysis of imagery and geospatial information to describe, assess, and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on the earth

  • Provides the geographical context to precisely locate, analyze, and monitor activities and provides a basis for developing shared awareness of the operational environment 3 Components of GEOINT - Imagery
  • Imagery Intelligence: intelligence derived from imagery and sensors
  • Geospatial Information: identifies geographic location, characteristics of natural and constructed features and boundaries on the earth HUMINT Derived from information collected and provided by human sources:
  • Interrogations: captured or detained person
  • Source Operations: walk-ins, developed sources, and unwitting persons
  • Debriefings: friendly forces, refugees/displaced, returnees, volunteers SIGINT Produced by exploiting foreign communication systems and non-communication emitters 3 Subcategories of SIGINT - COMINT: foreign communications (radio, wire, cell, etc)
  • ELINT: emitters (OPELINT: location, movement, employment, tactics, and activity; TECHELINT: parameters of the signal like frequency, wavelength, function, modes, limitations, vulnerabilities, capability, etc)
  • FISINT (foreign instrumentation SIGINT): technical analysis of data intercepted from foreign equipment like telemetry, interrogators, tracking, fusing, arming and firing command systems, and video datalinks MASINT - Produced by quantitative and qualitative analysis of physical attributes of targets and events to detect, tag, track, characterize, locate, and identify fixed and dynamic targets and sources
  • Specialized technically derived measurements of the physical phenomenon intrinsic to an object or event Sources of MASINT include: - EO Data: emitted or reflected energy
  • Radar: radar energy reflected
  • Radio Frequency: radio freq/electromagnetic pulse with nuclear testing or high-energy events
  • Geophysical: transmitted through the earth
  • Materials: gas, liquid, solid samples
  • Nuclear radiation OSINT - Based on open source information
  • Susceptible to manipulation and deception TECHINT - Derived from the exploitation of foreign material and scientific information
  • Begins with acquisition of the equipment
  • Used by US weapons developers, countermeasure designers, tacticians, and operational forces to prevent technical surprise, reduce adversary advantage, and enhance force protection
  • Also used to produce on capabilities, limitations, and vulnerabilities Counterintelligence (CI) - Offensive and defensive 5 Functions of Counterintelligence - Collection
  • Analysis
  • Production
  • Investigative operations
  • Functional services I2 (Identity Intelligence) - Combines biometrics, forensics, and DOMEX capabilities with intelligence
  • DOMEX: captured document and media exploitation
  • BEI: biometric-enabled intelligence
  • FEI: forensic-enabled intelligence GEOINT consists of the following components: - Imagery
  • Imagery Intelligence
  • Geospatial Information

Imagery The likeness or presentation of any natural or man-made feature or related object or activity and the positional data acquired at the same time Imagery Intelligence The technical, geographic, and intelligence information derived through the interpretation or analysis of imagery and collateral materials

  • Also includes the exploitation of imagery data derived from various sensors Geospatial Information Identifies the geographic location and characteristics of natural or constructed features and boundaries on the Earth HUMINT - A category of intelligence derived from information collected from people Interrogation The systematic process of using interrogation approaches to question captured or detained persons to obtain reliable information Source Operations Missions may develop information through the direct or indirect questioning of overt or clandestine sources SIGINT Intelligence produced by exploiting foreign communications systems and noncommunications emitters COMINT Intelligence and technical information derived from collecting and processing intercepted foreign communications passed by radio, wire, or other electromagnetic means ELINT Intelligence derived from the interception and analysis of non-communication emitters FISINT Involves the technical analysis of data intercepted from foreign equipment and control systems such as telemetry, electronic interrogators, tracking/fusing/arming/firing command systems, and video data links MASINT - Information produced by qualitative and quantitative analysis and physical attributes of targets and events to characterize and identify them
  • Derived from specialized phenomenon intrinsic to the object or event The OSINT Functional Manager for the IC is: CIA

The DOD Lead for OSINT is: DIA TECHINT Derived from the exploitation of foreign material and scientific information The Joint Captures Material Exploitation Center (JCMEC), managed by _____________, is the primary DOD contingency TECHINT capability and includes recovery of captured material and enemy equipment DIA Joint Foreign Material Program Office Counterintelligence Conducts operations to identify, deceive, exploit, disrupt, and protect against espionage, other intelligence activities, sabotage, or assassinations conducted by foreign powers, organizations, or agents Identity Intelligence Operations result in the discovery of true identities; links to events, locations, and networks; and reveals hostile intent DOMEX The application that assists in the exploitation of captured documents and media that when processed may provide valuable information Applied ______________ supports the identification of individuals and their disposition at the point of encounter Biometric-enabled intelligence (BEI) GEOINT Enables area familiarization, area monitoring for I&W, feasibility assessments, preliminary planning, peacetime operations, and emergency operations worldwide T/F: Geospatial information provides the basic framework for visualizing the operational environment True
