Practical research Background study SOP2: What are the difficulties students are experiencing? During the pandemic everyone got affected, people lost their jobs, people had to adjust to the new normal, including students. In the Philippines, most students got affected because not only did they have to help themselves learn but also they don’t get to see their friends and teachers, which is a big advantage for a student to learn things. It has been hard for students because in one site, a teacher stated that she “detected a lack of eagerness” from the students. Some teachers even go from one house to another house of a student to check on them and some found out that some students are out in the garden helping out and getting lazy on doing their modules. It is true that sometimes “the way a teacher encourages is very different from how a parent would.” One factor that affected students to have difficulties during the pandemic is the gadgets needed and the internet connection. Without having a laptop or cellphone it is hard for the student to learn and interact with the school works. In some cases, even if some students got their gadgets to join in a virtual class, some don’t have a space around their house to concentrate. They get distracted by the other members of the house, the background noise, the house chores or not in some cases they get distracted by playing online games. Another difficulty that students experienced during the pandemic is their mental health. Before the pandemic, everyone got used to going to school and seeing their friends and teachers. At least we get to share our problems with our friends, we get to at least have someone listen to us that lessens our sadness but now that pandemic hit, we all have to stay home and cant talk to our friends that much anymore. In a site it stated that, “the American Psychological Association (APA) reports 81% of Gen Z teens (ages 13–17) have experienced more intense stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.” This is saying that the students mental health got affected because they couldn’t go to school face to face. It is truly stressful that students couldn’t get to see their friends and teachers like they used to.
