Variables

DEFINITION 3 Independent variables are the factors the experimenter manipulates. Dependent variables are measurable behaviors of the participant. TERM 4

Correlations

DEFINITION 4 How one trait or behavior accompanies another, and the degree of relationship between these naturally occurring variables. Coefficient-a numerical value that indicates the degree and direction of the relationship between the two variables. Positive- two variables move in the same direction Negative-two variables move in opposite directions Zero- no relationship between two variables The closer the variable is to one (+ or -) the stronger it is. TERM 5

Quasi experimental design

DEFINITION 5 A scientific research method mainly used in the social sciences. "Quasi" means likeness/resembling so quasi- experiments share characteristics of true experiments which seek interventions or treatments. Key is lack of random assignment and use of time series analysis: interrupted and non-interrupted.

TERM 6

Experimenter bias

DEFINITION 6 When conducting research, the tendency of experimenters to influence the results in the expected direction. Experimenters have their own personal beliefs and expectations. The danger is research is that these personal biases may produce flawed results. TERM 7

Descriptive

Research

DEFINITION 7 Observes and desribes behavior and mental processes without manipulating variables. Naturalistic observation-Researchers systematically measure and record the observable behavior of participants as it occurs in the real world without interfering. Surveys- Polls/interviews to measure a wide variety of psychological behaviors and attitudes. Case study- An in depth study of a single research participant.
