DEFINITION 3 Approach-approach choose between two or more favorable alternatives Avoidance-avoidance involves a forced choice between two or more unpleasant alternatives both of which lead to negative results Approach-avoidance occurs when we must choose between alternatives that will have both desirable and undesirable results. General Adaption Syndrome

DEFINITION 4 Reaction to severe stressors alarm, resistance, exhaustion 1. in the alarm reaction your body experiencesa temporary state of shock and your resistance to illness and stress falls below normal limits. 2. Sudden outpouring of hormones (development of diseases of adaption) 3. more susceptible to serious ilnesses and possibly irreversible damage to your body. TERM 5

Stress and illness

DEFINITION 5 cancer- cell rapidly divides and then forms a tumor that invade healthy tissue. cardiovascular problems- heart disease, coronary heart disease, heart attack PTSD posttraumatic stress disorder- severe anxiety after a tramatic life event.

DEFINITION 6 The study of how bioloical, pychological, and social factors affect health and illness TERM 7

Emotion-focused vs problem-focused

coping

DEFINITION 7 emotion-focused we attempt to manage our emotional reactions. (Distraction) Problem-solving deals directly with the stressor to decrease or eliminate it. (generate solutions)
