Sun

DEFINITION 1 The sun is 333,000 times bigger than the Earth. The sun is one out of 100 billion stars in the galaxy. The sun contains 99.8% of the solar systems mass. TERM 2

Mercury

DEFINITION 2 The temperatures on Mercury rise above 800F and go below- 300F. because of its lack of atmosphere. The sun's rays are about seven times as strong on Mercury as they are on the Earth. Because Mercury has no atmosphere, Mercury's sky is black and the stars can be seen during the day. TERM 3

Venus

DEFINITION 3 Venuss atmosphere is made up mostly of carbon dioxide. Venuss clouds are made out of sulfuric acid. Venus is the only inner planet that rotates east to west. TERM 4

Earth

DEFINITION 4 Glaciers cover 10% of the worlds surface, which is as big as South America. Earth travels 660 thousand miles per hour. The Earth rotates on its axis more slowly in March than in September. TERM 5

Moon

DEFINITION 5 Only 59% of the moon's surface is visible from earth. From Earth, we always see the same side of the moon; the other side is always hidden. The moon rotates at 10 miles per hour compared to the earth's rotation of 1000 miles per hour.

Jupiter

DEFINITION 6 Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. Jupiters diameter is 11 times larger than Earths diameter. Jupiter has over 60 moons. TERM 7

Saturn

DEFINITION 7 Saturn has the most colorful rings. Its rings are made up of ice and rock. If you were to put Saturn in a bathtub it would float. TERM 8

Uranus

DEFINITION 8 Nights on Uranus can last for over 40 years. Uranus is the only planet that rotates on its side. Uranus is 14 times larger than Earth. TERM 9

Neptune

DEFINITION 9 Neptune is the stormiest planet. Neptune goes around the sun once every 165 years. Neptunes rings are very dark and incomplete. TERM 10

Mars

DEFINITION 10 From Earth, Mars looks red because of its rusted iron rocks. Mars has the tallest volcano in the solar system. Mars has a thin atmosphere that is made of mostly carbon dioxide.
