The syllabus for the echd 2050: academic and career planning course offered at the university of georgia during spring 2012. The course focuses on career and academic decision-making, setting goals, identifying values, skills, and interests, and making informed choices. Diversity and Classroom Climate Understanding diversity in the workforce and academia are important aspects of this course. As such, student’s experiences, values, opinions, and beliefs are highly valued in this class. Whenever possible, class topics and discussions will be approached from a diverse perspective and students are encouraged to share their ideas and respect individuals with different perspectives in the class. Academic Honesty All academic work must meet the standards contained in “A Culture of Honesty.” All students are responsible to inform themselves about those standards before performing any academic work. More information is available at: http://www.uga.edu/stuact/handbook/stuaffairs/disability.html Attendance and Participation: Attendance Policy: Attendance/Participation is worth 150 points of your final grade (15%) You are expected to attend every class and arrive on time You have one (1) unexcused absence without penalization. Excused absences will require proper documentation Additional unexcused absences will result in a 10-point attendance/participation reduction. Failure to attend Assessment Day will result in an automatic drop from the course. Two latenesses will equal one unexcused absences. **In the event of an absence, you will still be expected to find class notes and to make up any missed work. Participation/Attendance: Excellent – Attends all or 16/17 classes. In addition, student is proactive in participation through leading, originating, informing, challenging contributions that reflect in-depth study, thought, and analysis of the topic under consideration. [150 - 130 points] Satisfactory – Student attends less than 16 classes and demonstrates reactive participation with supportive, follow-up contributions that are relevant and of value, but relies on the
leadership and study of others, or reflect opinion rather than study, thought, and contemplation. [120 – 100 points] Minimally acceptable – Student attends less than 15 classes with passive participation including being present but inattentive, or attentive, but not actively involved. [100 – 80 points] Unsatisfactory – Student attends less than 15 classes and is uninvolved including being absent, late, present but not attentive, sleeping, making irrelevant contributions that inhibit the progress of the discussion. 1. Career Goals Paper (75 pts) : Describe your career plans and goals at the beginning of this course (2-3 pp.) It is not necessary to be sure about your career goals to complete this assignment successfully. 2. Assessment Write-up and Reflections (200 pts) – You will be taking a battery of career inventories to assess your personality type, interests, and abilities. Most of these will be administered at the Career Center in Clark Howell Hall on our Assessment Day, which is during class time. You MUST attend assessment day or you will be dropped from the course. You will write a 3-5 pp. paper and discuss the results of your assessments and reflect on your experience while completing your assessments on Assessment Day. 3. Meaningful Career Search Activity (75 pts) – You will attend one of the events listed below and write a 2-3 pp. paper discussing your experiences. 1. Career Seminar 2. Career Fair 3. Individual Career Consultation ***Be sure to check the UGA Career Center Spring 2012 Calendar of Events (http://www.career.uga.edu/DYNAMIC/mainevents.cfm or www.uga.career.uga.edu) to identify the days and times of the Career Seminars. 4. Informational Interview (100 pts): You will interview someone in your career/major field of choice and present the results. 5. Exams and Quizzes (150 pts): Quizzes: I reserve the right to give pop quizzes as an in class assignments at any time. Midterm: The mid-term exam will come from the readings and class discussions from the first half of the semester. Make-up exams will only be given ONLY in the event of a documented medical emergency or significant extenuating circumstance (i.e. death of a family member). Exams will begin promptly on the day they are scheduled. If you are late to class, you must still finish the exam within the allotted time for class. No extensions are given due to tardiness.
No talking is allowed during exam time. Anyone suspected of cheating will be reported. Students are expected to assist the instructor in maintaining an environment of Academic Honesty. Missed Exams: I require prior notification for missed exams. For more information see section on Exam/Quiz Policies.
6. Final Portfolio (150 pts): You will submit a final portfolio that includes all assignments completed throughout the semester and a final paper summarizing your experiences. 6a. Resume and Cover Letter (50 points): We will work on resumes and cover letters in class. You will submit a final resume and cover letter with your final portfolio. 7. Career Search Final Presentation (100 pts) In lieu of a final exam, you will complete a 10-20 minute presentation detailing your experiences in this course. This presentation will be presented during finals week in class and will count as your final exam grade. The final exam follows the University’s final exam schedule. Students are required to attend, participate, and meet the requirements for the final exam during the scheduled final exam time. Failure to show up for the exam will result in a zero. Arriving late, leaving early, or failing to participate will negatively impact your grade, as points will be deducted. PLEASE NOTE: LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED UNLESS ACCOMPANIED BY A MEDICAL EXCUSE All assignments must be paper copies turned in at the beginning of the class period on which the assignment is due (email assignments will not be accepted unless there are extenuating circumstances.) Total Possible Points 1000 points 100% Grades assigned are based on the following scale: A = 100-93% A- = 92-90% B+ = 89-87% B = 86-83% B- = 82-80% C+ = 79-77% C = 76-73% C- = 72-70% D = 69-60% F = 59% and below Examination and Quiz Policies: Exams will be given at the beginning of the class on the day it is scheduled. Students arriving late to class will not be given additional time to complete the exam. Failure to attend class on the date of an exam without prior arrangements will result in a zero for the exam. Prior arrangements for exams are only made for unusual circumstances and are at the discretion of the instructor. Verification (e.g., from Health Center) must be provided to support requests for absences for illnesses. Excused absences, in which prior arrangements are not possible, (i.e. accident requiring hospitalization, death of an immediate family member, sudden illness, etc.) will be handled on a case by case basis and make-up exams will be administered as soon as possible after the missed exam. Students are not to ask classmates about the content of the exam or to discuss the exam with other students, as these behaviors constitute academic dishonesty.
