ECE 332 Week 1: Coffee with Your Favorite Theorist ECE 332: Childhood Development Coffee with Your Favorite Theorist What would you ask if you were given the chance to have coffee with your favorite theorist? I was asked to choose a theorist that I would like to have coffee with. I get a chance to think about the theory they came up with and the impact it had on the development of early childhood education. There are a lot of influences that goes unnoticed in our classroom, for example, the kid size furniture in our classroom. I am looking forward to going more in depth on my knowledge with my favorite theorist and become a better educator. Summary of Theory The theorist I chose to have coffee with is Erik Erikson. Erik Erikson’s theory was pyschosocial development. That a child’s development was made up of eight social stages. It explains the importance of social experiences and social relationships have an impact on development and growth in people. His theory consist of eight stages: Trust vs. Mistrust Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt, Intitive vs. Guilt, Industry vs. Inferiority, Identity vs. Confusion, Intamicy vs. Isolation, Generativity vs. Stagnation, Integritiy vs. Despair and Support vs. Criticsim. Why You Chose This Theorist I chose this theorist because he believes that the social skills help people to develop and grow. Working as a preschool teacher, play an social interactions are very important in the classroom. Children learn to express their feelings, deal with their emotions and speak to one another while in different centers in school. Educators use group discussions during morning meeting and lessons to help the children further their thinking and social skills. In the article from Cherry (2020) “Erikson was interested in how social interaction and relationships played a role in the development and growth of human beings.” Topics for Discussion Three topics that I would discuss is how can I use his theory in my classroom? Is there away to meet the needs to help the childre meet his stages? And what made him believe that social and relationship building is important for development and growing up? I just wan to know what made him think it was so important for social needs to be met and if they werent a person will not be as successful in life. Also just how to uses the stages in my classroom and the different ways it can help a child to be successful in my classroom and how I can create the oppportunities for the child.
