Emotional Rescue: A Nonverbal Card Game for Understanding Emotions, Assignments of Communication

Emotional rescue is a card game designed to help players identify and express emotions through nonverbal cues. In this game, each player is dealt 7 cards, representing different emotions such as contentment, frustration, hope, love, shyness, loneliness, happiness, indifference, sorrow, joy, fear, anger, and warmth. The objective is to get rid of all one's cards by demonstrating the emotion represented by a selected card through nonverbal cues, without using verbal communication. Players must then lay down their matching cards, and the demonstrator reveals the card once all matching cards have been laid down. The game continues with each player becoming the demonstrator and selecting a card to demonstrate, with the lead passing to the left. When the draw pile is depleted, the discard pile is shuffled and used as the new draw pile. This game is an excellent tool for improving emotional intelligence and communication skills.

Emotional Rescue Object of the game : To get rid of all your cards. Method of play:

  1. One individual acts as the dealer and deals 7 cards to each player.
  2. The undealt cards are the draw deck. These are placed face down in the center of the players.
  3. The play to the dealer’s left begins play by lying one of his/her cards face down in front of him/her. She/he then nonverbally demonstrates the emotion represented on his/her selected card to the other players. Only nonverbal cues may be used. If the player desires to use nonverbal vocal cues, she/he may say the word “spaghetti” utilizing appropriate paralinguistic cues.
  4. Any player who believes that he/she has an emotion card which matches the demonstrator’s care, lays his/her matching card(s) face down in front of him/her.
  5. The demonstrator then turns his/her card(s) face up. Any player who has laid down a matching card then turns it face up. Any player who has laid down a non-matching card returns that card to his/her hand without showing it to the other players. The face up matching cards are then placed in a discard pile. If no player has laid down a matching card, only the demonstrator’s card is placed in the discard pile. If either the demonstrator or another player who has laid down a matching card has another matching card in his/her hand, that card may also be discarded, but only if that player had already laid down a matching card.
  6. All players who did not lay down matching cards then draws one card from the draw pile. If no player has laid down a matching card, the demonstrator must draw one card.
  7. The lead is then transferred to the player on the demonstrator’s left. That player becomes the demonstrator and selects a card from his/her hand to lay down and demonstrate. The play thus continues as before.
  8. Play continues until one player has gotten rid of all his/her cards.
  9. When the draw deck becomes depleted, the discard pile is shuffled and it becomes the draw deck. *****Each card represents a different emotion. The emotions the cards represent are: 2 = Contentment 6 = Frustration 10 = Hope Ace = Love 3 = Shyness 7 = Loneliness Jack = Happiness 4 = Indifference 8 = Sorrow Queen = Joy 5 = Fear 9 = Anger King = Warmth**
