ENGLISH REVIEWER- FIRST QUARTER SOURCES OF INFORMATION -facts learned or provided by something or someone Primary Sources- if authentic and have not been used or subjected to evaluation or assessments. Examples are audio recordings, autobiography, letters, etc. Secondary Sources- offer analysis or restatement of a primary source Examples are documentaries, biographies, critiques, etc. Tertiary Sources- collection of primary and secondary sources and are usually in a form of a list Examples are almanacs, indexes, dictionary, etc. News Reports- information on current events. Speech- formal address or discourse delivered to an audience Informative Talk- enlightenment regarding a specific topic the audience knows nothing about Panel Discussion- facilitated by a moderator and is a discussion about a specific topic with panelists SUMMARY AND PARAPHRASE Summary- brief overview of a discussion or argument Paraphrase- using your own words to express something that was written or said by another person TEXTUAL AIDS -are educational instruments used to simplify comprehension of texts - uses graphical outlines and elements to give general idea of a topic Examples of Textual Aids - Anticipation or Reaction Guide- activating past knowledge and build interest about new topics - Flow Chart- used to show development of ideas and is arranged in order - Character Map- describes character’s appearance, action, or personality - Timeline- used to show sequence of events with dates - Word Map- helps increase vocabulary - Cause and Effect Diagram- also known as Ishikawa diagram and it identifies the causes and effects of a problem you are studying or writing about - Story Map- helps learn the elements of a story or book - Venn Diagram- used to compare and contrast ELEMENTS OF A STORY Setting- where and when the story takes place Characters- person, animal or object represented Two Types of Characters - Protagonist- main character - Antagonist- villain Plot- series of events that happened in a story Conflict- is the struggle between to forces. Man vs man, man vs society, man vs himself, man vs nature, man vs technology, man vs supernatural Theme- idea in the story or the author’s meaning ELEMENTS OF A PLOT 1. Exposition- beginning of the story - where the characters, settings, and main conflict is introduced 2. Rising Action- main character is in crisis - events leading up to the conflicts begin and becomes complicated 3. Climax- the peak of the story and edge of seat happenings 4. Falling Action- begins to slow down and ties up loose ends 5. Resolution- concluding paragraph and resolve remaining issues and ends the story. TONE, MOOD, AND AUTHOR’S PURPOSE Tone- writer centered - Attitude the writer projects towards the subject of the reader Mood- reader centered - It is influenced by setting - Overall feels and atmosphere of the work of literature Author’s Purpose- reason why the author writes about a topic Types of Author’s Purpose - To persuade - To inform - To entertain CHARACTERIZATION - Is the process by which the author reveals the personality of a character Two Types of Characterization 1. Direct Characterization- tells the audience directly what the personality of a character is 2. Indirect Characterization- shows things that are related to a character’s personality Five Methods of Indirect Characterization a) Speech- how the character speaks b) Thoughts- private thoughts and feelings c) Effects on Others- feel or behave other people d) Action- what the character does e) Looks- looks and appearance Three Elements of Characterization 1. Physical Appearance 2. Action, Speech, Behavior 3. Interaction with others POINTS OF VIEW Author’s Omniscient- third person’s pov with thoughts and all knowing Author Participant- author might be the main or secondary character Author as an observer- objective treatment without thoughts TYPES OF LISTENING Appreciative Listening- for appreciation and enjoyment Can be applied to music, when someone is speaking like sermons from places of worship, motivational speeches, or even from a comedian, orchestra, etc.
