Week 1 Discussions: Introduction and Week 1 Discussion: Ethical Issues for Managers 1. From Chapter 1, as a manager, identify the morals or principles you most relate to and describe why. Explain why it is important, in your opinion, for managers to embrace it. Good personal ethics is essential for health care managers to have. They oversee the works and activities of the healthcare personnel they oversee. "An action is moral if it arises from goodwill, not from other motives" (Darr, 2011). This Deontological theory of Immanuel Kan, an 18- century German philosopher, should be embraced (Darr, 2011). A healthcare organization's success depends on how the manager manages their resources to achieve the best possible results. A leader that can handle the resources they have and make rational moral decisions, all while being honorable and honest with the workforce they oversee, is, in my opinion, one to be respected. This principle is based on humanity, inhumanity, and sympathy. Additionally, the other principle that I think I most relate to is virtue ethics. It is a principle based on theological ethics. One benefit to this ethic is that different moral philosophies do not adequately involve the realities of ethical decision-making. Overall, in my opinion, managers should embrace their position because, realistically, no leader or manager is perfect. Still, I believe, through practice, trials, and error, and with a continuous strive to achieve virtuous traits, a manager will improve one's ability over time to be virtuous, morally ethical, and resourceful. These qualities will enhance the success of their subordinates and the healthcare organization References Darr, K. (2011). Ethics in Health Services Management, Fifth Edition.
