PM204 Semester II 2010 AUTUMN REPEAT

Answer four questions, selecting one from each Section and one other.

Section A

  1. Using specific examples, compare and contrast G-protein coupled receptors and ligand gated ion channels with respect to location, structure, signalling and timescale of response.
  2. With the aid of diagrams describe the mechanisms that the cell uses to control intracellular calcium levels (85%). Name two drugs that affect these processes, indicating their mechanism of action and effect on calcium levels (15%).

Section B

  1. Describe the mechanisms of action of three different classes of antibacterial agents, illustrating your answer with specific drug examples.
  2. Outline the eukaryotic cell cycle (35%). Describe how changes in cyclins control its progression (65%).

Section C

  1. Write an essay on histamine as an inflammatory mediator (65%) and outline the mechanism of action and uses of drugs that affect histaminergic inflammatory signalling (35%). Give specific drug examples in your answer.
  2. Describe the physiological regulation of gastric acid secretion (35%) and the pharmacological treatment of peptic ulcer (65%). Give specific drug examples in your answer.
