The following is a list of general topics which could potentially be on the exam (Thursday February 26, 2009). This study guide represents the topics you should know for the exam. Define Human Communication -Factors that influence Communication (Cultural/Social differences) -Factors that disrupt Communication Differences between speech, language , and communication -Definitions -Components -Disorders -Periods of development
Know the difference between Speech and Language disorders. (Ex. Articulation disorders versus Semantic disorders) Understand Differences versus Disorders Different professions associated with human communication, what they do, where they work, and requirements for that field. What do ASHA and AAA stand for? What is the purpose of each organization? What does CCC stand for and what is its importance? Be able to name the 4 processes of speech and the structures involved in each process. -Know how each process is related to speech. -What are examples of different pathologies (disorders) associated with each process? -Be able to label and describe the functions of each structure if provided a diagram. Know the three characteristics used to describe consonants ( place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing ) and be able to describe consonants using these characteristics. Why is it important to study the normal development of communication? What are some general principles of communication development? Understand the differences between: Social Development Cognitive Development Speech and Language Development Know the characteristics and developmental milestones that occur in each time period. (Pre-lanuage, Toddler, Pre-School, School-age and Adult)
