After the us became a democratic republic, white men and later women gained the right to vote. Sentimentalism, originating from europe, promoted feeling over rational thought and led to the rise of companionate marriages, where wives were seen as equals to their husbands. The american colonization society was formed in response to the continued existence of slavery, with the goal of emancipating slaves and resettling them in africa.
