Board - The Barber's Board

Barbershop - A professional business where the practice of barbering takes place

Barbering - Any practices done to the hair, beard, face, scalp, or neck by either hand or mechanical appliance. Only when done for remuneration and for the public. Not for treatment of disease, or physical/mental ailments

Barber - A person who is licensed to engage in the practice of barbering in a state under its authority

Purpose of Regulation - Legislation deems it necessary in the interest of public health, safety, and welfare. Restrictions imposed only if necessary to protect the public from recognized dangers AND in a manner not affecting the competitive market

Citation - an instrument which meets requirements set forth, and is served upon a subject for purpose of assessing a penalty in an amount established by this rule. Department disposes of this citation after 6 months

Biennial Renewal - Each licensed barber who continues to practice/service shall renew license every 2 years

Licensure - The department shall license any applicant who satisfies the requirements of paying license fees and passing barbering test. One may cut in a licensed barbershop if fail first attempt and scheduled a second. May not cut if fail the second time

Examination Prerequisites - Must apply to department for licensure

Must be at least 16 years of age

Pays required application fees

Active license in another state

Minimum 1200 clock hours

Barbering program at public/government operated school

Legal, Investigative, Inspection Service - The department shall provide all legal, investigative, and inspection services

Board Member Term - The Governor appoints successors for terms of 4 years. No person serves more than 2 consecutive terms

Board Membership - Created within the Department, a Barber's Board consists of 7 members appointed by the Governor

Board Member Eligibility - 5 members which have practiced barbering for 5 years in state. 2 member which are citizens of the state not presently licensed

Board Member Meetings - Board shall annually elect a chair and vice chair from its number

Maintain a headquarters in Tallahassee

Hold annual board meetings (or more) with no less than 4 members

Board Member Accountability - Governor shall call investigations of any complaints/reports made of the board or its members such as; neglect of duty, felony, drunkenness, incompetency, permanent inability to perform official duties

Gross Malpractice/Incompetency - Leads to 3-9 month suspension

Cutting While Infected - Leads to suspension until proven uninfected

Sanitation Violations - 1-2 $50 fine/each

3 or more/clear harm to customer $200-$300 fine

Operating Shop w/expired License - $50 fine per month

Operating Shop w/changed address - $250 fine for the first 6 months

Permitting Unlicensed Barber - $

$400 if from 6 months to 1 year

Presenting as one/Impersonating/Suspended License - $500 Fine
