Health and Social Care Intent Plan

The Joseph Whitaker Health and Social Care department aims for its students: ✓ To provide the students with the knowledge, skills and attributes of the Health and Social Care sector ✓ To prepare and develop students research skills, to develop and embed specific terminology relating to subject matter ✓ To develop a student’s cognitive and problem solving skills required when entering the sector – teaching, social work, nursing and caring opportunities ✓ To develop and stretch the students ability to become independent leaners and to be able to research actively and methodically ✓ To develop a student’s interpersonal skills and abilities to enable them to work collaboratively and successfully with others ✓ To develop relationships with Student Support and TA’s in the support and development of differentiated tasks to fully engage SEND students ✓ To enforce and further develop the transferrable skills that Health and Social Care offers and enables progression into different sectors of the workforce – communication, qualities ✓ To provide students with the reality of the rewards and challenges of working within the Health and Social Care Sector ✓ To stretch and strengthen the students understanding of the complexity that surrounds the ever changing landscape that the Health and Social Care Sector offers ✓ To support and encourage all students to progress into the next level of further/higher education/work placement within the Health and Social Care Sector Knowledge Understanding Competence Curriculum Links Have extensive knowledge of the impact of positive and negative human development over the different life stages from birth to later adulthood and events that occur during all life stages To gain knowledge of the legalities involved with the Health and Social Care Sector Be equipped with the anatomy and physiology of different conditions which affect people during their life To know the different pathways available to working in the Health and Social Care Sector Understand how we adapt and raise to all situations in our life time and how we overcome barriers in achieving to our expectations and ambitions To understand the differing needs of everyone and the challenges they may face and adapting situations to meet their needs To be able to understand government guidelines when implementing government initiatives. To understand the wide range of career opportunities within the Health and Social Care Sector To become competent, enquires who have the knowledge, skills and attributes to be able to fulfil ambitions within the Health and Social Care sector To be competent in valuing this diverse sector and adapting to the needs of all To be competent in the Health, Safety and Security requirements within the Health and Social Care Sector To be able to communicate effectively and actively promote care values within the Health and Social Care Sector Be competent in ‘reflective practice’ Links to: KS3 PSCHE/ICT through to KS4 OCR Nationals L2 and KS5 OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate L3 in Health and Social Care – University/Apprenticeships/Workplace Rationale: Health and Social Care will develop the knowledge and Understanding of all students interested in the working environment of the Health, Social Care and Children and Young People’s workforce, equipping them with the right skills and attributes that are required from such a diverse, rewarding and challenging sector. Health and Social Care will enable them to understand the physical, intellectual, emotional and social transition throughout the life stages from birth to later adulthood enabling them to understand the different life events that could affect individuals during the life stages allowing them to make judgements on how to deal with these.

Within the Health and Social Care courses students will also be able to understand the skills and qualities that are needed in ensuring that legislation, rights and care values are upheld together with the effectiveness and importance of effective communication in developing a rapport with all within the Health, Social Care and Children and Young People’s sector, embedding this as they progress through KS4 and KS5. To give students the understanding and recognition to topical situations in society, those of Mental health and Public Health giving students the knowledge of how to deal, live and support these areas. To develop and ensure students complete the transition by further development and embedding the ability to become independent individuals who have the sufficient skills and qualities to be able to progress into further/higher education or access the workforce.

  • Understand how personal hygiene, safety and security measure protect people Skills/Knowledge This unit will enable students to gain an overview of how we support the needs/rights of individuals, they will be able to link the way individuals are treated in line with legislation. Students will increase their vocabulary within the Health, Social Care and Child Care environments linking to specific terminology and the application of this. The unit gives an good understanding of how we treat people and how we want to be treated within society. They will link their knowledge and their skills gained to the bigger picture of how Legislation oversees this to ensure the sector is fully protected. RO

  • Being able to communicate effectively within Health, Social Care and Early Years Settings Skills/Knowledge This unit enables the students to gain the understanding of how to establish good communication skills and the effectiveness of applying these effectively within different Health and Social Care environments. This unit links with all units across all years as students appreciate the importance of good communication in all settings. RO

  • To know how to use effective communication skills to build positive relationships in Health, Social Care or Child Care environments Skills/Knowledge This unit allows students to gain further skills in the effective delivery within care environments and to gain the knowledge of adapting needs to situations which will allow them to practice their skills in the workplace. The unit highlights how these skills/qualities are transferrable across different work places. Unit 2
  • Understand the concepts of equality, diversity and rights and how they are applied in Health, Social Care or Child Care environments Unit 4
  • Understand the: o Cardiovascular o Respiratory o Digestive o Musculoskeletal o Control and Regulatory o Sensory systems Systems, malfunctions and the impact on individuals Skills/Knowledge This unit explores the Anatomy and Physiology aspects of working in the Health and Social Care sector. The students will gain an awareness and knowledge of the human body and the malfunctions that can affect the life’s of many. Students will gain the knowledge and be able to make judgements on ways in which adjustments can be made in improving an individuals life through lifestyle choices/changes and the outcomes and benefits of this. Unit 17
  • Know the main concepts, types, causes and effects of mental health conditions
  • Know the different medical conditions may affect progress through life stages and look at how people can be supported Skills/Knowledge This unit allows the students to gain knowledge and understanding of human development throughout the different life stages. They will research and be able to establish links to how behaviours change over the different life stages and ways in which life events affect a person’s development. Students will research and develop a clearer understanding of events that are predicted and unpredicted and how these are dealt with by individuals. They will explore and be able to make judgements of life style choices which affect a person’s development throughout their life. Students gain skills in research and further embed the use of ICT skills. Skills/Knowledge This unit gives the students an insight into the Sector. They will be able to effectively research different carers and pathways available and develop an understand as to how to access these positions. Further embed ICT skills throughout this unit with research. Students will be able to gain the knowledge of where/when and how to gain advice/support for their chosen destinations and this allows them to effectively plan for their futures.

  • Understand how current legislation and national initiatives promote anti- discriminatory practice in Health, Social Care and Child Care environments
  • Understand how equality, diversity and rights in Health, Social Care and Child Care environments are promoted Skills/Knowledge This unit allows students to explore ‘society of today’ and to gain knowledge and understanding of the discriminatory practices that can impact on peoples life’s and lean the skills in order to effectively deal with this. Students to be able to practice within workplaces effectively after understanding and gaining the knowledge of the different types of Legislation/initiatives and policies and how they are applied and followed by all within the workplace. Unit 3
  • Understanding or potential hazards in Health, Social Care and Child Care environments
  • Understand how legislation, policies and procedures promote Health, Safety and Security in Health, Social Care and Child Care environments
  • Understanding of the roles and responsibilities involved in Health, Safety and Security in Health, Social Care and Child Care environments
  • Know how to respond to incidents and emergencies in a Health, Social Care or Child Care environment Skills/Knowledge This units looks at the potential hazards that can occur within all Health and Social Care
  • Be able to support individuals with mental health conditions to plan their care, treatment and support Skills/Knowledge This unit allows students to gain the knowledge of an increasing illness that is impacting on many lives within the UK. Students to be able to supply strategies/support to improving the lives of people suffering from Mental Health. Students and will gain knowledge through research techniques in identifying positive help. Unit 24
  • Understand systems for the protection and promotion of public health
  • Understand public health strategies Skills/Knowledge This unit enables students to gain the knowledge of Public Health initiatives that are in place to support the lives of all in the UK. Public Health is extremely topical and students will be able to use their research skills to find ways in which Public Health supports their local community in line with national initiatives and the impact both negative/positive that these initiatives have on people and the environment.
