Nursing’s Environmental Theory The nursing theory leads the way to nursing practice and provides the groundwork for critical thinking. Nightingale's environmental theory was one of the first nursing theories and is still relevant in today's nursing care. I feel I channel Nightingale when I approach to care for the sick. I ask myself, "Is this best for the patient?" Her whole focus was on the sick, their comfort, a cure (Tunstall, 2016). In this paper, I will step into Nightingale's role as the environmental theorist and describeher journey through the four stages of theorizing, syntax, theory testing, and evaluation. First Stage I, Florence Nightingale, care for soldiers who keep dying day and night from infection and poor environmental conditions. Many soldiers are dying from typhoid, cholera, and dysentery, not from injuries from the war. When I make my rounds on these soldiers, I think to my selfmyself what could be done to save these soldiers' lives? With these questions fresh in my mind, I begin to investigate and lobby the royal commission to change the poor environmental conditions. I had a theory that nursing is not medication administration, but with the sanitation of the environment and improving ward conditions, can eliminate disease (Hunt, 2017). With this passion for environmental changes, I created Nightingale's environmental theory, which consists of nursing interventions that utilize the environment to aid in patient recovery. Second Stage Alteration of one's environment is essential to recovery from illness, and observation is the key to good nursing care (Tunstall, 2016). I have theorized there are serval observations and environmental changes that will aid in recovering the ill. I call these canons or fundamental principles of nursing care. I believe these ten concepts; cleanliness, offering hope and advice,
Nursing’s Environmental Theory proper ventilation and warming, light and noise, the health of the house, food, observation, bed and bathing, variety of environment, and personal cleanliness can help restore patient health far beyond a patient's physical needs or orders from physicians (Tunstall, 2016). If any of these areas are out of balance, the patient can experience diminished health (Gilbert, 2020). I think that the goal of nursing is to give the patients the best possible care. Third Stage I put my environmental theory into place at the hospital, caring for the sick, and witnessing the positive results. Cleanliness speaks for itself; keeping the room clean helps prevent further illness. Dirt and germs breed disease and infection by keeping rooms clean it will fix and prevent disease. I must appeal to all friends, visitors, and attendants of the sick to not try and "cheer" the sick up by making light of their danger and exaggerating their recovery possibility (Tunstall, 2016). Giving advice not supported by fact can be detrimental to recovery. I keep the room well-vented by keeping the air they breathe as pure as the outside air without the chill to prevent infection (Tunstall, 2016). Keeping the environment quiet is essential for the better of the sick. I am confident of one thing, anything which wakes a person suddenly out of his sleep will put him in a state of tremendous excitement and make more profound and lasting mischief(Tunstall, 2016). As a nurse, I must be aware of the noises surrounding my patients. The bed and bedding of the sick should be clean and dry. I always take into consideration the amount of perspiration is released from the ill and feverish. One must think, where does all that moisture go? Into the bedding because there is nowhere else for it to go(Tunstall, 2016). I pride myself on my cleanliness and instruct my fellow nurses on the importance of keeping oneself clean. The health of the house includes five necessary principles to aid in the care of the sick. The place must have pure air, pure water, efficient drainage, cleanliness, and light(Tunstall, 2016). The
Nursing’s Environmental Theory house's health depends on these things; without these, no place can be healthy(Tunstall, 2016). The patient's food intake should have the requirements to heal (Alisher et al., 2019). The patient's diet should contain proteins, vitamins, and carbohydrates, among other vital nutrients, to facilitate the patients' recovery process. Finally, one of the most important lessons to be given to a nurse is observing the sick. I teach my fellow nurses what to watch, how to follow, what symptoms indicate improvement, which areas are essential, what is neglect, and what kind of neglect (Tunstall, 2016). Fourth Stage Nightingale's environmental theory stands the test of time because there is an evidence- based practice to support her idea. Today's nursing has had policies, procedures, and protocols to help assure patient safety. Despite all these practices, there still are infections running ramped throughout the healthcare system. Nightingale's Mytheory has laid the foundation for today's nursing practice. The environmental approach was the stepping stone for healthcare reforms that are still in practice today. Nightingale's theory changed the way we practice medicine today. Today, nurses and anyone having contact with a patient must wash their hands to prevent disease spread. Infection control is now an integral part of nursing and nursing practice worldwide (Hillar, 2020). The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that effectively applied hand hygiene is a vital intervention that can be used to prevent the spread of infection(Hillar, 2020). Nightingale's theory is an essential part of creating a safe environment, promoting good patient outcomes, and adapting to change with changing patient and global needs. Conclusion
Nursing’s Environmental Theory Without knowing at the time, Nightingale's environmental theory has changed nursing. The environmental approach focuses on the importance of cleanliness, sanitation, and germs. Florence was adamant that patients would heal if the material used to treat them were clean, and their recovery rooms were clean and tidy. Florence Nightingale is the founder of modern nursing, and her environmental theory has guided the general rules for today's nurse.
