Solution Quiz 1

Q1: Name 7 layers of OSI model and explain Network layer? (3)

Ans Seven layers are:

  • Application Layer
  • Presenttaion layer
  • Session layer
  • Transport layer
  • Network layer
  • Datalink Layer
  • Physical layer Network Layer: Responsible for establishing, maintaining, and terminating connections. Responsible for transfer of information across the network to which it is attached.

Q2: Define Bandwidth and Spectrum? (2)

Ans: The Spectrum of the signal is the range of frequencies that it contains. Bandwidth is the width of the spectrum or The difference between Higher and Lower frequencies.

Q3: Difference between Circuit and packet switching? (2)

Ans: In circuit switching a dedicated link is established between two stations through the nodes of the network Data generated by the source is transmitted along the dedicated path rapidly.At each node incoming data are routed to the appropriate channel without delay. Exapmle of circuit switching is Telephone Network. In Packet Switching Data is sent in a sequence of small chunks, called packets. No need to dedicaye a transmission path along the network. Each packet is passed from node to node along some path from source to destination. At each node the entire packet is retrieved, stored briefly and then transmitted to the next node.

Q4: What is the channel capacity for a channel with a 300 Hz bandwidth and

a signal to Noise ratio of 3 db. (3)

Sol:

B=300Hz SNR=3 db C = B log 2 (1+SNR) B= 300hz SNRdb = 3 So SNR =10 0. C=300 log 2 (1+ 10 0.3^ ) C= 474 bps
