Week 1 Discussion: Leadership Theory Application to Advanced Nursing Practice Consider the leadership theories and styles that have been addressed during Week 1, as well as their value to advanced nursing practice. Reflect upon your current leadership roles within the profession and respond to the following. Select one leadership theory or style that aligns with your personal philosophy and leadership stance. Explain the selected theory or style, and discuss how it can be applied in your future MSN role. Discuss your current leadership roles (formal and informal), and describe the formal and informal leadership roles that you will have in your area of advanced nursing practice. In your future MSN role, what are the implications of your leadership for individuals, teams, organizations, and communities? Include current, peer-reviewed scholarly support (outside of class resources) to validate your work Leadership theory or style aligning with my personal philosophy and how it can be applied in my future role Transformational leadership can affect current nursing practice as this type of leadership promotes, innovation, and thus creates change in the society. Transformational leadership is therefore essential for the practice of evidence-based practice since it fosters acceptance for fresh ideas and the expansion of their application. If used effectively, transformational leadership in nursing is a potent instrument. “Transformational Leadership (TL) has been identified as one of the most effective leadership styles in health services. In TL, a leader mobilizes followers’ motivations toward an organizational vision by: empowering staff; challenging them beyond the status quo; and recognizing their individual needs and inspirations” (Moon et. al 2019). Nurse leaders who are committed to making positive changes in their organizations must start by modeling the changes they wish to see there. It is no secret that being recognized for a job well done feels awesome. Successful transformational nurse leaders understand the importance of making others feel appreciated. The simplest effort such as openly acknowledging someone in front of peers can make a significant difference in employee morale and work ethic. Integrity is the decision to do right, even when you think no one
is watching. The truth is, there is almost always somebody watching. Nurses who demonstrate transformational leadership in nursing successfully have one thing in common, integrity. Additionally, effective patient safety culture must be developed within health care services, and transformational leadership is crucial to achieving these goals. It also helps to promote patient safety and facilitate a balance between job expectations and resource availability. “There are four elements of transformational leadership, often referred to as the ‘four Is’. Idealised influence – leading by example and setting expectations. Inspirational motivation – inspiring people to reach new
heights. Intellectual stimulation – encouraging learning and growth and Individualised consideration – coaching and empowering to success” (Collins, et. Al 2020). These leadership characteristics contribute to enabling other nurses to act beyond their own needs and interests, for the greater good of the whole group and organization. The transformational leader will also identify the organizational needs and work to transform the organizational culture, to the benefit of the organization itself. “Transformational leadership has a strong focus on motivating and engaging staff and providing an environment that empowers them to become effective and creative team members” (Collins, et. Al 2020). Discuss your current leadership roles (formal and informal) and describe the formal and informal leadership roles that you will have in your area of advanced nursing practice. Every organization has both formal and informal leadership. A person who has been appointed to a position that has been approved and given authorization by the organization exercises formal leadership. A person who can convince and influence others in the workplace but lacks official or appointed power to act is said to be acting in an informal leadership capacity. As a nurse educator I can exercise both roles. Formal nursing leadership roles involve practicing advanced care, innovating solutions, and influencing operations and policy. The nurse leader oversees the integration of patient care, including development of treatment plans, collecting and evaluating treatment results, and managing patients' treating teams. Informal leaders in nursing are often nurses with a high level of clinical competency who are recognized as experts. This type of leader influences the group, comes from the team, and is chosen by the team. Informal leaders are frequently charismatic, influential, with an outspoken temperament or a strong will, but they do not have the authority to hire, fire, or change how other employees are paid. Informal nursing leaders can be problem solvers, power users, and
advocates who take on additional responsibilities, participate in committee work at the unit or hospital levels, and sit on shared councils. The informal leader is frequently asked for comment on new initiatives and may take on supportive responsibilities like preceptor, teacher, or charge nurse. Health care companies should make use of nurse informal leaders as special resources to get the best results and a high- quality healthcare delivery system. In your future MSN role, what are the implications of your leadership for individuals, teams, organizations, and communities? Through motivating others, inspiring others, and staying current on medical knowledge, leadership fosters individual accomplishment. Leadership may help teams perform better by organizing and leading collaborative interprofessional teams, developing treatment plans to enhance care and patient outcomes, personally caring for patients, and speaking out for and educating patients. Designing innovative, evidence-based nursing practices and managing information systems and technology to improve healthcare outcomes may also benefit from leadership. “Transformational leadership (TL) is known to be essential to achieving Magnet ® recognition, an internationally prestigious status for nursing care excellence” (Moon et. al 2019).
