This paper will examine leadership style and personality profiles. It will also show the styles and profiles are expressly applied in advanced communication situations. My approach to this paper began with an analysis of my leadership style and personality profile. Determining my style of leadership began with the completion of two questionnaires: The Blake and Mouton Managerial Grid, and The Jung Typology Test. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to reflect on past communication practices, apply the newly identified personality profile and leadership style to explore how new communication skills can be applied to these new developments. This paper will also include a discussion of strategies that can be applied to enhance communication ensuring that the message sent is both well received and understood. Leadership Profile The Blake and Mouton Managerial Grid is a matrix that characterizes leaders based on two dimensions, the concern for people and the concern for results. After drawing a horizontal line from the people score and another to the score, the lines intersected at the top right box. This indicated to me that I am a team leader. I encourage my team to reach their goals and I am a resource agent for them. I also continue strengthening my team members through team-building exercises while encouraging every member to be effective in their varying roles. The Humanmetric Jung/Meyers Typology test determines that people are characterized based on four different personality types. These types are Extraverted (E) vs. Introverted (I), Sensing (S) vs. iNtuition (N), Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F), and Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P). After taking the personality type test, the results are that I have an ENFJ personality. Extraverted Advanced Communication in Systems Leadership 5 Conflict I have been in my present position, at this current clinical setting, for 5 years. Since being here, I have never had a consistent interdisciplinary team (IDT). The social worker and dietitian seem to change every six to nine months. For the last year, however, I have had a social worker and dietitian with whom I have been able to work well with. The patients' outcomes were getting better, I believe, partly because they tend to have a consistent team educating as well as having various discussions with them. In December, however, I was told that I would yet again be getting a new IDT. I became very upset because I felt that the clinic was always getting the short end of the stick. I complained to my DO that this was unfair not only to me but to the staff and patients as well. I explained that when another clinic becomes short our clinic suffers because my social worker and dietitian are pulled and we are assigned, strangers. My DO stated that all of the social workers and dietitians were being realigned because several clinics had been closed. However, these clinics were not in our area. This resulted in me getting the medical director (MD) involved to help solve this conflict. Looking back I might not have become so offended if this had not already happened several times. This time I felt I had to speak up for the clinic. My DO stated that because I never complained before she did not think it would be a big deal for me. I regret not saying something sooner before there was tension. I did not get to keep my social worker but I did get to keep my dietitian. Advanced Communication in Systems Leadership 6 Implications for my future from this conflict is to speak up when things truly affect my team. My personality profile is 44% judging. I like to know how things are going to get done, and I want to make sure those that are doing tasks are capable of doing them. Regardless of what the conflict is a manager/leader should know how to deal with conflict in a way that promotes communication and work with others to resolve the issue (Benton, 2015). I should have addressed the issue head-on much earlier. Team Leading I was put in charge of organizing a family fun day for our area. Because the have been so many structural changes within the organization morale is down. My biggest task was getting the teams to buy into having the fun day. When leaders lead they should share their vision with excitement. They motivate their followers with their passion, lead by example, and provide those under them a picture of what is possible (Richter et al., 2016). One of the traits of the ENFJ is being tuned into the needs of others and being aware of what matters most to others even when it involves facts and details. So, I tried to elicit what was important to everyone and then proceeded from that angle. After talking with everyone I realized they just want to be appreciated. I told them that this is what this event is all about, showing appreciation for their hard work. In reflection, I feel we show our team appreciation every day by celebrating small things like birthdays, completing certifications, and when meeting productive for the month. Part of my personality profile is being able to manipulate others in a way that generally makes them believe in their dreams and themselves. Advanced Communication in Systems Leadership 7 Implications for future practice would be to ensure all team members feel appreciated. Communicate what is happening with the company without ensuing panic. Being transparent is important along with good communication. When people feel inclusive they are more willing to go that extra mile for the cause. Summary With my leadership style and my personality, communication with others is not very often difficult for me as a leader. Communicating effectively is often difficult for those who fail to listen. Regular communication tends to create an energizing, healthy work culture that is the cornerstone of employee engagement. When communication is effective there is an understanding that there is constant room for improvement and work efficiency. There is always room to improve our relationships with each other as we strive to give and receive constructive feedback. References Beirhiti, Z., Girait, A. N., Marchai, B., (2018).
