PA Dental Law Act - the dental law which regulates the licensure of dentists and dental hygienists and the practice as a DH in this commonwealth. Board Regulated Practitioner - a dentist, DH, public health dental hygiene practitioner, or expanded function DA. Auxiliary Personnel - persons who perform dental supportive procedures authorized by the act and this chapter under the general/direct supervision of a dentist. Continuing Education Certificate - a document prepared by the program sponsor which contains the title of the course, the dates attended or completed and hours of education completed. Coronal Polishing - procedure limited to supra-gingival removal of light plaque and extrinsic stain from the exposed natural and restored surfaces of the teeth using a rotary instrument with a rubber cup or brush and polishing agent. EFDA Program - an expanded function DA training program. General Supervision - supervision by a dentist who examines the patient, develops a treatment plan, authorizes the performance of DH services to be performed within one year of the examination, and takes full responsibility for the performed of DH. Local Anesthesia - the elimination of sensations, pain, in one part of the body by regional injection of anesthetic agent. Public Health Dental Hygiene Practitioner (PHDHP) - licensed DH certified by the Board as having met the requirements of section 11.9. Authorized to perform DH services without the authorization, assignment, or examination of a dentist. Subgingival Agents - therapeutic agents, including antimicrobials, antibiotics, antiseptics, or anesthetics, placed below the free margin of the gingiva by a local delivery system or device, injectable systems for ointment, gel, pastes fibers, films, strips, slabs, discs, chips.. etc. Who may practice DH in the state of PA? - only persons holding a current license issued by the Board Who may be a candidate for a DH license in the state of PA? - graduated from a DH school accredited by US Department of Education or CODA Who is CODA? - The Commission On Dental Accreditation What tests must be passed to be eligible for a DH license in PA? - National Board DH Examination and the dental hygiene clinical examination. How long and under what circumstances are these tests considered valid? - 5 years since approved by the Board. After 5 years, Board will accept passing scores only if the candidate has been engaged in post-grad training or in the practice of dentistry.
