Personhood, Human Dignity and Moral Status
In this particular case study, we look at a case of fetal abnormality. This case is about
an immigrant couple named Jessica and Marco who are faced with a very difficult decision in
regard to their unborn child. This couple has been living here in the United States for about three
years with their Aunt Maria while working on getting a place of their own. Jessica and Marco
are both employed, Jessica works at a restaurant while Marco works in construction. They
finally saved up the money for a place of their own when they find out that Jessica is pregnant.
A few months into the pregnancy they inform Marco that their unborn child has a very rare
condition that causes the baby to not develop arms. Along with that news he is also informed
that there is a pretty good chance that their child will also have Downs Syndrome. The Doctor
wants to deliver the news to Jessica but Marco wants to wait. Their Aunt happens to overhear
the doctor telling Marco the findings and begins crying and praying. They do finally inform
Jessica of the news and lay the options out for her. The Doctors tells them they can either have
an abortion or have the baby.
