Career Exploration Journal The University of Arizona Global Campus PSY600: Introduction to Graduate Study in Psychology
Career Exploration Journal Describe your understanding of the Special Terms and Conditions disclaimer for the UAGC Master of Arts Program in Psychology. If this disclaimer does not apply to your situation, explain why it does not. I am of the understanding that after successfully completing the Master of Arts in Psychology program it is not a certification or licensure to perform professional work in Psychology with a company. I also understand that UAGC are not promising graduate’s that an organization will accept him/her for employment and that graduate’s are not guaranteed a professional certification and or licensure. Criminal records also can lead to an individual not being able to obtain licensure, certification, and employment in this field of study. Based on your research of job titles, describe the skills, knowledge, and qualifications necessary to be a viable candidate for a career in psychology. Staff Psychologist (Behavioral Health) at US Veterans Health Administration. The full job description is “This Staff Psychologist will be assigned to a Behavioral Health program within the Behavioral Health Service. Psychologists provide consultation to medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. Staff psychologists may be involved in program evaluation, teaching, training, and research activities. In addition to providing direct patient care, this psychologist does have limited administrative/managerial duties.” The basic requirements that need to be met for this specific job listing is the following: United States citizenship, proficient in English, the education requirement is that set individual has a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association
(APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed. Licensure candidates must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States. Discuss your career development reflection by addressing the following questions: Is psychology a growing field of expertise and opportunity? According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook predicts that the overall demand for psychologists will grow 6% through 2032, which is one of the jobs that will grow quickly over a different field of study. If the opportunity and or field of expertise were not one of the jobs that will see an increase over the next few years, I would still chose this occupation. The reason why I chose the US Veterans Health Administration for a location is because not only am I a veteran and want to give back to my fellow brothers and sisters in arms, but I have also sat in the VA with either elderly veterans or veterans my age and we all have serious mental issues that individuals outside the military branches would not quite understand. What kinds of tasks, situations, and challenges can you expect to encounter in the workplace? Speaking from firsthand from a United States Army Veteran of 12 ½ years of service with three deployments, I understand that the tasks, situations, and challenges that one will encounter will vary from individual to individual. There are two types of veterans in my eyes, those that have seen war and those who have not. Individuals that have seen war with their brothers and sisters
dying on the battlefield will obviously pose a different task, situation, and challenge from those that have not. I do not necessarily disregard an individual’s time in service that has never seen combat, however I want that individual to be truthful in speaking about their time within the military service. Did you find any entry-level positions listed? Do you see yourself as more than an entry- level candidate? If so, describe your current profession or experience in the field of psychology. I did not find any entry level positions listed on Indeed and I can understand the reason. I most certainly see myself as an entry level candidate because I need time to learn, study, as well as have a mentor to show me how they operate and evaluate individuals that are being seen by a professional that has worked in their field for several years. If you need additional skills or qualifications to be a viable candidate for one of the job listings you found, what steps will you take to develop those competencies? I will need my doctoral degree for this position before I can even be considered for this position. I will then need to be eligible to become an LMFT associate in Texas, which consists of Marriage and Family Therapy and or a related field from an accredited program as well as pass the national licensing exam by the Associated of Martial and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards.
