One such form of entertainment that has gained significant popularity in recent years is video games. Video games have evolved from simple, two-dimensional graphics to highly advanced three-dimensional environments with immersive gameplay experiences. To enhance these experiences, players often seek out cutting-edge hardware components such as high refresh rate monitors, powerful GPUs, and state-of-the-art keyboards and mice equipped with cutting-edge technology and brimming with features. With the continuous growth of the global economy and an increase in disposable income, people have started investing in quality computer peripherals. Computer peripherals have seen major developments in the past few years, making them crucial additions for any avid gamer. Among these upgrades, RGB lighting in computer peripherals has emerged as one of the most popular trends. Computer peripherals include accessories that attach to your PC, enabling you to perform functions that would otherwise be inconvenient without them. Peripherals range from input devices such as keyboards and mice to output devices such as speakers and headphones. RGB the primary colours used in additive mixing to produce all visible shades. When combined at equal intensity, they generate pure white light. Modern LEDs allow precise control over each element's emittance, permitting countless colour variations and lighting effects. This very capability of the modern LEDs is the centre of our study. Many computer peripherals with RGB lighting are aimed at gamers and some manufacturers, like ViewSonic, even claim that RGB in their products can have impact on factors like response time, perceived contrast, and eye strain (Davis, 2021) which are considered crucial to gaming performance. Even on the scientific side of things, there have been multiple researches on the psychological and physiological impact of light and colour on human behaviour. Thus, in our study, we aim to verify the hypothesis that “Presence of RGB lighting in computer peripherals has positive impact on the gaming performance of IIIT-H students” by means of scientific methods. Review of Literature Colour can trigger physiological changes like increased blood pressure, increased metabolism and eyestrain and hence the affect the mood and behaviour. Colours in the red side of the colour spectrum are considered to be warm colours and can evoke feelings of comfort or feelings of rage and anger, while colours in the blue side of the colour spectrum are considered to be cool colours and can evoke the feelings of calmness or sadness and indifference (Can Color Affect Your Mood and Behavior?, 2022). Red colour is also seen as a symbol of dominance or fear and can degrade the performance of the individual experiencing it (Can Color Affect Your Mood and Behavior?, 2022). These affects are not limited to colour and can also be caused by exposure to light of specific wavelengths. For example, exposure to blue light can activate the structures of the brain responsible for higher-order attentional processing, thus improving alertness and the performance in tasks requiring sustained attention (Cajochen et al., 2005). The lighting conditions of an environment can have impact on the subject’s sense of relaxation and alertness as a cause of the change in thermal comfort due to the change in perceived temperature as a result of varying the Correlated colour temperature (CCT) of the lights (Liu et al., 2022). Light therapy involving light boxes is used as a cure for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) as a way to counter depression by changing the mood using bright light (Romocean, 2017). Other studies involving showing subjects metameric movies, i.e., movies matched for colour and luminance, using Visual Display Units (VDU), with varying melanopic-irradiance, show that impact of light on alertness can also be brought about by passive exposure (Allen et al., 2018). Research Questions Our project's main research question, “What is the effect of RGB lighting on the gaming performance of IIIT-H students?”, seeks to investigate the impact of RGB lighting on the gaming performance of students at IIIT. Specifically, it aims to explore whether the presence of RGB lighting in computer peripherals has a positive or negative effect on the gaming performance of the students. This research question may also contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the impact of environmental factors on gaming performance. The second research question, “How does the presence of RGB lighting in computer peripherals affect the focus and attention of IIIT-H students during gameplay?”, seeks to explore how the presence of RGB lighting in computer peripherals affects the focus and attention of IIIT students during gameplay. The study aims to investigate whether the presence of RGB lighting can improve or distract the focus and attention of students while playing games. Through this question, we also hope to shed light on the impact of RGB lighting on the cognitive processes involved in gaming. The third research question, “How does the presence of RGB lighting in computer peripherals affect the overall gaming experience of IIIT-H students?”, aims to investigate whether the presence of RGB lighting can enhance the overall gaming experience of students at IIIT. The study will examine whether the presence of RGB lighting creates a more enjoyable environment for gamers or is it just a way of gamers to avoid FOMO. The fourth research question, “What is the difference in gaming performance between IIIT-H students using peripherals with RGB lighting and those without RGB lighting?”, aims to compare the gaming performance of IIIT students who use peripherals with RGB lighting to those who use peripherals without RGB lighting. The study seeks to investigate whether the presence of RGB lighting in computer peripherals has a significant impact on the gaming performance of students at IIIT. The final research question, “What is the impact of RGB lighting on one's immersion during gaming?”, aims to investigate whether the presence of RGB lighting in computer peripherals can enhance the immersive experience of gamers by creating a more engaging and visually stimulating environment. Through this project, we will aim to find out the validity of our hypothesis, which is that “Presence of RGB lighting in computer peripherals has positive impact on the gaming performance of IIIT-H students”. Research Methods Our study will utilize two main research methods: face-to-face interviews and surveys. Face-to-face interviews will be conducted to gain in-depth insights into the participants' views on the impact of RGB lighting on their gaming performance. On the other hand, we will use surveys to gather quantitative data, allowing for a statistical analysis of the data obtained. It will involve methods like asking the participants to rate their opinions on a numeric scale of 1 to 10, providing a numerical representation of their perceptions on the impact of RGB lighting on their gaming experience. By utilizing both research methods, we can ensure that we collect both qualitative and quantitative data, which will provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of RGB lighting on the gaming performance of IIIT students.
