History of Anthropological Thought ANTH 6 December 2012 Exam 3: Practice, Power, and Agency Due date: 5 pm on Tuesday, December 11 either under my door or in my box in the Anthropology Office. You must turn in a hard copy of the exam – no electronic documents will be accepted. In all you should submit no more than 3 pages, 2 pages for question, .5 for question 2, and .5 for question

Use 12 point font. 1) Essay (60 points) Marks (2011:223) states that …”people are never simply doing, in one place, everything that they are capable of, which is why we cannot easily infer the intellectual capacities of the inhabitants from what we happen to find at any particular site.” In your essay, you should comment on this quote by identifying readings from 2 of the 3 sub-disciplines that inform, support, or contradict this statement. If you chose a theoretical perspective that contradicts this statement, you need to suggest why you either agree or disagree with the position. Remember to paraphrase the theoretical position of the authors you discuss and also PROVIDE CONCRETE EXAMPLES from their work that serve to illustrate your point. Think creatively here, certainly examples from post-modernism and globalization fit Marks’s statement. 2) Definition of Terms A) Define TWO of the following terms. B) Explain its significance/importance to anthropology. Use about 100 words per term for a total of ½ a page. You must use the readings from weeks 11 through 16 of the course to answer the questions. EXTRA CREDIT 1

Provide a 200 word answer for 20 points. For those of you who had issues on the 1st^ exam, use this question and provide a 300 word answer for 30 points, please identify yourself as one of the students who had brain freeze on the first exam at the top of your answer so we know. REMEMBER, you can only do this extra credit if you did not hand in the job talk summaries. How would feminist anthropologists critique the work of the globalization theorists (Appadurai, Bourgios, Inda and Rosaldo, and Scheper-Hughes)? Provide specific examples from at least one of the globalization theorists. Coverage of assigned readings The exam should demonstrate that you have read and understand the assigned readings, can synthesize the material, and present in a succinct way. Use of examples and supporting evidence Evidence and examples should be included to demonstrate your understanding of how specific cases, the work of individual scholars, and so on are related to broader concepts, topics and themes. Presentation and writing Answers should be written in essay format. Organization, clarity of writing, grammar, spelling, citing of references, punctuation, and so on will all be taken into account. 2
