JOHN MILTON AND PARADISE LOST pag 96/97 JOHN MILTON: LIFE Milton was born into a Puritan family so he was the most important exponent of the Puritans. He was the Cromwell's supported. At the Puritans age the censorship was abolished but when Cromwell knew to have opponent reintroduced it. For this reason Milton wrote the AEROPAGITICA to defended to liberty of press. He thought that kill a book was like to kill a man. His most important work was PARADISE LOST, an epic poem. He was the first who write an epic poem in Middle English. He was fundamental for the development of the english literature and language. He died in 1674 blind and in poverty. PARADISE LOST He knew that his project was ambitious. As a Puritan he wrote a Christian epic poem. The events in Paradise Lost were the result of a divine plan. The basic event is the Fall of Man, the Biblical story of Adam and Eve. All of these episode are presented in a epic poem. The difference of Epic poem and Paradise Lost is the features of God. In a epic poem human speak with divine of pagan. In Paradise Lost he become of Judaic-Christian tradition. Milton introduced Christian themes. THE METRE Milton used the HEROIC VERSE. It is unrhymed pentameter line. Milton decided against rhyme because he believed it was frivolous device and it wasn't suitable to the subject. He pointed out that the classical poets didn't use rhyme. He want to present the serious moral: there was a possibility of salvation. POETIC TECHNIQUE AND LANGUAGE Milton fused the classical learning and the Bible. In the poem there are a lot of classical references used to present aspects of Christian belief. Another features of the poem was the epic simile. It was extend for many lines like in Homer and Virgil. Milton often used words that derive from latin or italian and his syntax.
