1-2 Self - Assessment Self - Assessment Exercise: I completed the Self-Assessment Exercise and scored a 10 out of 12. What two items do you feel are your greatest strengths contributing to your preparation of HR work? I believe that having effective communication and interpersonal skills is crucial when working in the HR department. HR professionals must be able to clearly convey information and instructions to colleagues. Additionally, HR managers should act as a liaison between the company and its employees, representing the employer effectively. They must possess the skills to resolve conflicts impartially and professionally. In a previous role as a Care Coordinator, when my manager went on maternity leave, my director asked me to lead the team in my manager's absence. I was responsible for ensuring that all tasks were completed correctly and in a timely manner to avoid any delays in patient care. Additionally, I was tasked with supporting my coworkers and addressing any team issues that arose. One of my colleagues was proactive in helping others, particularly our members. However, during my manager's leave, he began claiming tasks for himself instead of letting me assign them within our team. My director, who had higher access levels, noticed this behavior and spoke to him about waiting for me to assign tasks instead of taking them independently. Despite this conversation, he continued to claim tasks for himself without informing me. Unfortunately, he mistakenly sent the referral to the wrong department, causing a delay in the member’s process. My supervisor was frustrated with his lack of attention to her instructions, so
I had to intervene. I reassured her that my colleague is a valuable asset to our team and has successfully assisted many members in need. I promised to have a conversation with him before resorting to disciplinary action. I spoke with my colleague, conveying the director’s concerns and warning him about the consequences of not following instructions. I offered to give him more responsibilities but requested that he seek my approval before submitting work to the correct department. My co-worker expressed gratitude for my support and for preventing him from facing disciplinary action. Effective communication skills, including both verbal and written communication, are essential for successfully sharing information and engaging with various individuals within the organization. Additionally, being able to nurture and sustain employee relationships, negotiate, and resolve conflicts is crucial (Travel Perk, 2023). In conflict resolution, it is crucial to have the ability to help parties find common ground. This fosters a sense of security and concern for everyone within a company. It is important for individuals to feel acknowledged and valued. Additionally, it helps prevent potential legal issues for the company (Bamboo HR LLC, 2024). What two items do you feel are your greatest development needs? I believe that my biggest areas for improvement are in HRM training and gaining more expertise in human resources management. My ultimate goal with my masters in health administration is to become a director for Population Health. While I am passionate about this field, I have always been interested in human resources and would like to explore it further. I am also eager to learn how to apply my skills in different departments and enhance my technological proficiency through HRM. I am confident that this class will greatly benefit my future pursuits.
