Setting Goals

Later in Life

Most children can remember being asked, "what do you want to be when you grow up." That isn't something that I can recall. If an adult asked me this, it isn't in my memory. I grew up in a small, poverty-stricken community. My mother passed away when I was seven years old. I feel confident that my family was focused on survival rather than emphasizing a child's future education or career goals. My school was a small school, with approximately three hundred kids in kindergarten through twelfth grade. I didn't excel in school. I was mediocre, never applying myself and doing the minimum necessary to get by. My teachers pushed me to try harder, to study more but didn't push too hard because there was an overwhelming sense of pity for me because my mother was dead. The teachers showing me pity was not beneficial for me; in fact, it was quite the opposite. I needed to be pushed. One thing I have learned about myself as I have become an adult is that I am smarter than I ever believed. I can do well if I am willing to work hard and put my mind to it. Like most kids from my town, I graduated from high school and decided to attend the community college a few towns over. My lack of ambition from high school followed me into community college. I didn't apply myself and did the minimum necessary. As is the norm at college, the professors didn't push as hard, which allowed me to miss more classes, and eventually, I quit. My experience professionally has been astounding. I have had jobs from fast food, factories, health care, and now working for a tech company. My willingness to work hard, put in long hours, learn any task set before me, stay committed and dedicated have served me well in the workforce. I have had many people who have seen the potential in me and

allowed me to display those characteristics to them and prove myself. I have had wonderful leaders and horrible leaders but have been able to learn something from both styles. My desire to go back to school and earn my degree was set forth by goals that I have set for myself. My first long term goal is to obtain my Bachelors in Healthcare Administration. Obtaining this degree will allow me to further my career in Compliance and Regulation in the Healthcare field. I realize that this will push me and be a lot of hard work. My second goal is to maintain a GPA of no less than 3.0, which will satisfy my final goal of a combined Bachelor's and Master's Program. I know this will be a new challenge for me with my history of not applying myself to study, but I know that I will achieve it with my commitment. I realize that while working full time and attending online school will often present a challenge. I also know that when faced with a challenge, if I focus and break my large tasks into small ones, I can meet every deadline set before me. I plan to use my calendar in Outlook to manage assignments, both professionally and academically, to ensure I do not miss deadlines. I will schedule a time for school work daily during my lunch hour, after work, and on the weekends. Although the next couple of years will be busy for me, I am excited about my future in Healthcare Administration and letting others know that it is never too late to set goals for yourself.
