Shakespeare's Macbeth Act 1 As the play begins, three witches gather to meet Macbeth who is returning from an important battle. When Macbeth and Banquo encounter the witches, they predict that Macbeth will be named the Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland, and that Banquo will be the father of the kings. The witches disappear. Ross, a nobleman, enters and greets Macbeth as Thane of Cawdor, just as the witches predicted. Later, King Duncan tells Macbeth that he intends to make his son Malcom his heir, and that he plans to visit Macbeth's castle. Macbeth's wife receives a letter from Macbeth describing the witches' prophesies. Lady Macbeth is ready to do whatever is necessary to ensure her husband become king. She devises a plan to get Duncan's guards drunk while Macbeth kills the king and then blames the crime on the guards. She convinces Macbeth that he must prove his manhood by following through with Duncan's murder.
