Where is the work? Step 3: Making decisions This step involves comparing your options, narrowing down your choices and thinking about what suits you best. You can yourself the following questions: What is my best work/ training options? How do they match with my skills, interest and values? How do they fit with the current labor market? How do they fit with my current situation and responsibilities? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option? What will help and what will hinder me? What can I do about it? It is expected that at the end of this step you will have clear options and idea of what to do next in achieving your goals. Step 4: Taking action When you have all the necessary information from steps one to three, in step four, you can create your plan now take the necessary action. Ask yourself these guide questions: What actions/steps will help me achieve my work, training and career goals? Where can I get help? Who will support me? At the end of this step you have a plan to help you explore your further options or a plan which sets out the steps to help you achieve your next learning. What to avoid when selecting a career 1. Listening to people who will tell you that you should or should not do something: People around you like your family and friends think that they have a big influence in your career. They are not. Remember that at the end of the day you have to deal with your own choice alone. 2. Following in someone else’s steps: Your parents might have an expectation that you will follow their steps. Remember that what was right for them may not be right for you. 3. Not doing your homework. Don’t choose a career without taking the time to learn about it. It is important to gather information on the job’s responsibilities of your choice. 4. Not talking to those who know the job. Talk to someone who is in the career field that you are considering. That person can provide you factual information on how to work in that area. 5. Going for the money. Always look for the balance between money and how the work will fulfill you. 6. Ignoring who you are. Consider your personality type, interests, values and aptitude. These help you better choose your career. 7. Not considering location. If you live somewhere that does not offer many opportunities in your field and you are not willing to relocate you will have trouble getting a job. 8. Not looking beyond the best career list. Make a list for the best opportunities of the year, decade or the most in demand job. But always be mindful if the career and you are good match. 9. Ignoring the future. Consider if the career has a promising future before you start preparing for it so you won’t waste your time. FACTORS INFLUENCING CAREER CHOICES A person will come to his point of life where in he will choose the path he’ll take that is in lined with his personal interests, a career is a lifetime journey and about the life you want to lead—it is also where you build all the things you learned, your knowledge and experiences. It is the time where he will fulfill his goals and ambitions. People tend to be bias in choosing a career. His or her personal view oftentimes brings him/ her to his/her final decision especially when it comes to salary, skills and knowledge. Cultural background The cultural background of the person as well as his regional area and ethnic group can influence the future work choice. Besides family of the job seeker and local community also can become the factors which can determine someone’s future career. Person’s expectations and life values are always shaped according to the cultural issues, and they have connections with different parts of our lives. Understanding of the nature of our expectations and values can help us to understand our personality and make a right career choice. Economic and social conditions of life Our life benchmarks and career choices always lie in the context of the economic and social issues. And it is natural. Sometimes we can’t choose the society in which we have to live, but we can choose the way of life. Different situations and conditions which take place in our economic and social lives give us a definite choice and have a certain effect on it. And we have to take into account this factor. The financial aspect For many of us, money which we can earn is the most important factor which influences on the future career choice. This is not surprising. We have to pay for everything that we have in our lives. But everyone has different needs and ways of life that’s why think twice when considering the job which will not allow living as you like and make a correct and reasonable choice.
