Introduction The annual World No Tobacco Day campaign (31 May) is an opportunity to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use. Smoking not only affects smokers but also pollutes the surrounding environment and harms those who breathe in secondhand smoke. Coming to today's presentation, we're going to tell you the reasons why tobacco should be banned by showing more clearly its harmful and deadly effects. The situation: Smoking is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality: 8 million deaths each year and including around 1.2 million deaths from exposure to second-hand smoke. The World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that In 2020, 22.3% of the global population used tobacco, 36.7% of all men and 7.8% of the world’s women. Vietnam is one of the countries with the highest smoking rate in the world. According to WHO statistics, Vietnam has 22.5% of adults using tobacco, equivalent to 15.6 million people. (2015). It can be seen that the number of smokers remains at an alarmingly high level. II. The harmful effects of smoking 1. Health effects of smoking: 2. The environmental effects of smoking: a. Tobacco causes land degradation - According to Professor John M. Wallace, Department of Climate Studies at the University of Washington, growing tobacco is very bad for the soil because they absorb potassium (Kali)- containing substances in the soil 6 times more than other crops, making soil degrade, the soil becomes infertile and barren leading to soil erosion. b. Tobacco and Deforestation - The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 600 million trees are cut down every year to make room for tobacco plants and to produce tobacco products. - In order to have enough firewood to dry a large amount of tobacco => leading to indiscriminate exploitation of forests c. Tobacco pollutes water - An estimated roughly 4.5 trillion cigarette butts make their way into the environment every year. - People throw cigarettes everywhere, when it rains, they are washed into the sewers and eventually pollute rivers, lakes, coasts and oceans. d. Tobacco pollutes the air and contributes to global warming - Secondhand smoke contains a lot of soot, which is an air pollutant. - Cigarettes, smokeless cigarettes and e-cigarettes contain microplastics also increase the amount of plastic waste. This contributes to the increase of global warming and the greenhouse effect. 3. The economic effects of smoking Smoking is a health problem, the costs of which include sickness, pain, grief and misery. But tobacco use also imposes a significant economic burden on society. In addition to the direct medical costs of treating tobacco-induced illnesses there are other indirect costs including fire damage and environmental harm from cigarette litter .(WHO) estimates that, globally, smoking causes over US$500 billion in economic damage each year. Thế giới: - According to data from developed countries, the cost of treatment for tobacco-related diseases accounts for about 6-15% of total health expenditure., such as in Germany, where the loss is estimated at 24.4 billion US dollars (USD) per year;; in Australia is 14.2 billion. - Cigarette smoking cost the United States more than $600 billion in 2018, including: 4. More than $240 billion in healthcare spending Nearly $185 billion in lost productivity from smoking-related illnesses and health conditions Nearly $180 billion in lost productivity from smoking-related premature death $7 billion in lost productivity from premature death from secondhand smoke exposure. Việt Nam: - In Vietnam, although the tobacco industry makes contributions to the national budget, the contribution of the tobacco industry is not enough to offset the economic and health losses caused by tobacco use. - The global survey on adult tobacco use in 2015 showed that 31 trillion VND was the amount Vietnamese people spent to buy cigarettes in 2015. A smoker could see about 2 million VND a year is not too big, but looking at the overview, you will see that smokers are not burning cigarettes, burning health, but also burning money. - In addition to the cost of smoking, the total cost of treatment and the loss of work capacity due to illness and premature death for 3 of the 25 most common tobacco-related diseases caused by smoking is more than 23 trillion VND a year. III. Conclusion - In the end we chose to ban smoking because of the following 3 typical factors, firstly affecting health, then environment and economy. - Smoking is the cause of disease and death of many diseases such as cardiovascular, cancer, teeth and respiratory .. Not only smokers but passive smokers are also very easy to catch these diseases. - Smoking also has adverse effects on the environment such as pollution of water, soil and air - Not only that, smoking also has a great impact on the economy causes over US$500 (five hundred dollars) billion in economic damage each year. - So when we quit smoking, we get a lot of great benefits such as reducing costs, protecting the environment, reducing incurable diseases, eating well and especially improving our inherent beauty. - We will say “Stop smoking before smoke stops you"
